About this role

Annual Salary: $55,594.50 - $55,594.50 Hourly: $28.51 - $28.51 Department: Environmental Services, Public Service Division: Municipal Solid Waste FLSA: Non-Exempt Job Description: In this role, you will be responsible for driving and operating a refuse collection vehicle or street sweeping vehicle on an assigned route

Examples of Duties:

• Drives and operates an assigned collection vehicle in a safe manner on an assigned route for the collection of refuse. • Capable of operating multiple types of equipment. • Familiarizes self with routes and interprets route maps. • Places refuse in the collection vehicle either manually or using a semi-automatic container lifting system. • Uses a broom, shovel, pitchfork, or other safe means to pick up loose or spilled garbage or trash. • Places empty cans off street in a neat and tidy manner. • Completes pre- and post- route checks of assigned vehicle and route reports on a daily basis. • Maintains assigned safety equipment and uses it properly at all times. • Assesses and reports any unexpected mechanical problems to prevent further vehicle damage and/or unsafe operation. • Reports environmental code violations to supervisor. • Trains subordinates familiarizing the Driver-in-training with the responsibilities of a Driver. • Assumes the responsibilities of the Route Leader or Route Supervisor in their absence on an assigned basis. • Performs other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications:

• High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and 1 year of related driving experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. • Current South Carolina Commercial Driver’s License – Class B.

Preferred Qualifications:

• May require evenings, weekends, and holidays as scheduled. • In the event of major storms or other emergency situations, this position may be subject to 24-hour shifts or any other emergency schedule that is necessary to meet the City’s needs.
