• EXSC 360 Exercise is Medicine
• EXSC 387 Lifestyle and Chronic Disease Prevention
• EXSC 468 Exercise Prescription
The faculty member will also be encouraged to develop at least one new course in an area that aligns with the (1) professional responsibilities described herein and (2) the faculty member’s educational background and research interests; e.g., Exercise Across the Lifespan, Sport or Data Science, or Aging. The faculty member will also be asked to assist in supporting other department curriculum needs such as student advising and curriculum oversight.
Professional Service: 40% of time Description: The faculty member will assist current BYU faculty who are working to enlarge the capacity of the BYU Health Across the Lifespan Initiative (HALI) and provide more (1) experiential learning opportunities for BYU students and (2) meaningful service initiatives to our campus community, local communities, and society at large. The BYU HALI will be committed to enlarging campus and community outreach initiatives designed to improve physical, mental, emotional, relational, and spiritual health across all life stages, from children to older adults. These initiatives already stem from four existing entities in the BYU EXSC Department that seek to assist children and adolescents (BYU Strong Youth Project (SYP)), young and middle-aged adults (BYUMove and YBeFit), and older adults (BYU Gerontology). By more closely linking these four EXSC entities under the umbrella of the BYU HALI, increased synergy will result in increased impact. Currently across the BYU SYP, BYUMove, YBeFit, and BYU Gerontology, approximately 170 BYU students (undergraduate and graduate) are receiving experiential learning opportunities annually. We expect that the addition of this faculty member will allow us to provide approximately twice as many experiential learning opportunities for BYU undergraduate students in the following ways.
Related to the BYU SYP, the new faculty member would:
• Assist in administrative responsibilities associated with ongoing service initiatives and research projects, including service and research projects designed to (1) reduce musculoskeletal injury risk for adolescent athletes and (2) increase accessibility to and benefit from organized sport experiences for underserved elementary school students.
• Collaborate with proposed position #2 and other faculty in transforming current service initiatives into rigorous research experiences for undergraduate students that, among other positive social outcomes, produce scientific presentations, publications, and grant proposals.
• Coordinate external fundraising efforts to support all facets of the BYU SYP.
• Mentor BYU students as they design and deliver digital and physical educational services for youth sports stakeholders.
The BYU SYP now involves approximately 50 BYU students annually, and we estimate that this faculty member’s efforts will double that number.
Related to the BYUMove, the new faculty member would assist in performing administrative responsibilities associated with ongoing BYUMove efforts to:
• Provide BYU undergraduate students opportunities to serve as exercise mentors to BYU undergraduate student peers.
• Assist BYU undergraduate students in increasing theoretical knowledge and practical skills associated with exercise prescription and health coaching.
• Mentor 1-2 graduate students who design and execute research to measure the effectiveness and impact of BYUMove and general physical activity regarding university student thriving.
BYUMove now involves approximately 20 BYU students annually, and we estimate that this faculty member’s efforts will double that number.
Related to YBeFit, the new faculty member would assist in performing administrative responsibilities associated with ongoing YBeFit efforts to:
• Provide meaningful experiential learning opportunities for BYU undergraduate and graduate students by engaging them directly in the design, implementation, and evaluation of community-based health and fitness programs.
• Assist BYU undergraduate and graduate students as they apply classroom knowledge in real-world settings, including exercise sessions, health assessments, and interactions with diverse populations, including underserved community members.
• Support BYU undergraduate and graduate students through hands-on experiences that result in program delivery, communication and leadership skills, and data-informed decision-making experiences, while also gaining exposure to interdisciplinary collaboration and community engagement.
YBeFit now involves approximately 20 BYU undergraduate and graduate students annually and we estimate that this faculty member’s efforts will increase that number by 20.
Related to BYU Gerontology, the new faculty member would assist in providing more BYU students experiential learning opportunities, primarily associated with the Huntsman World Senior Games (HWSG), an annual event that is the largest annual senior games event in the world (more than 10,000 participants). For the past 25 years, BYU’s involvement in the HWSG has resulted in experiential learning opportunities for approximately 80 BYU students per year and we expect that this number would double with the efforts of this new faculty member. More students will be able to:
• Be trained to conduct health screenings and collect related data at the annual HWSG; e.g., measures of blood pressure, body composition, cardiorespiratory fitness, functional strength, glaucoma, visual acuity, carotid artery ultrasound, hearing, and cholesterol.
• Receive internship credit that counts for the internship requirement for the Exercise and Wellness major in the Department of Exercise Sciences and the BYU Gerontology Minor internship.
• Assist BYU faculty now involved with the HWSG to more effectively leverage current services into rigorous research experiences for undergraduate students and produce scientific presentations, publications, and grant proposals.
To summarize professional service expectations, this FTE will double the number of experiential learning opportunities for BYU students through BYU SYP, BYUMove, YBeFit, and BYU Gerontology, from approximately 170 to 340. Also, this FTE will (1) improve research outcomes associated with the four aforementioned BYU entities and (2) increase and improve service initiatives that benefit our campus community, local communities, and society at large.
Citizenship: 20% of time Description: The faculty member will be asked to (1) serve on department, college, and university committees as appropriate, (2) attend faculty meetings, devotionals/forums, and other official college and university meetings, (3) serve on professional committees and/or hold offices in appropriate professional organizations, (4) represent the department at various professional meetings at the local, state, and national levels as appropriate, and (5) mentor students in various professional settings.
