Education: College, CEGEP or other non-university certificate or diploma from a program of 1 year to 2 years. Dental laboratory technology/technician. or equivalent experience. Work setting: Independently owned business. Tasks: Prepare plaster models and moulds. Cast gold or metal alloys for bridges and denture bases. Maintain and order supplies. Mould wax over dentures set-up. Finish metal framework of dentures. Prepare wax bite-blocks and impression trays. Pack plastic material in moulds to form full or partial dentures. Polish and buff dentures. Fabricate and place temporary crowns and restorations. Computer-aided design (CAD). Fabricate and repair crowns, bridges or implants. Technical expertise (dental): Plastering. Packing. Waxing-up. Casting. Polishing. Assembly. Area of specialization: Full dentures. Partial dentures. Crowns and bridges. Ceramic or porcelain application. Gold dies and goldwork. Chrome castings. Work conditions and physical capabilities: Fast-paced environment. Work under pressure. Repetitive tasks. Manual dexterity.
