Help improve the systems behind healthcare in Yukon

Yukon Hospitals is looking for an experienced Information Systems Lead to join the team responsible for the clinical and business information systems used across our hospitals.

Reporting to the Manager of Information Systems, this position provides day-to-day leadership and support to a team of five Information Systems Management Analysts and one Functional Analyst, while also serving as a senior systems expert and escalation point for complex issues.

The role works directly with clinical teams, operational leaders, physicians, vendors and other technology professionals to solve problems, improve workflows and support changes to systems that healthcare teams depend on every day.

MEDITECH Expanse is at the centre of our current environment. At the same time, the position reaches beyond MEDITECH, working across an integrated healthcare technology environment that supports clinical and business services throughout Yukon Hospitals.

What you'll do

The work combines day-to-day coordination of the Information Systems team with senior-level application support and project work, including:

• Prioritizing and coordinating operational, project and system-change work across the team;

• Providing senior-level support for complex application and workflow issues;

• Working with clinical and operational teams to understand their needs and recommend practical solutions;

• Supporting system implementations, upgrades, testing, workflow improvements and change management; and

• Providing guidance, coaching and technical support to members of the Information Systems team.

One of the immediate areas of focus will be the continued modernization of our MEDITECH Expanse environment, including our planned move from Expanse 2.1 to 2.2 and implementation of MEDITECH Web Presentation Layer (WPL).

Our environment includes many interconnected applications supporting areas such as diagnostic imaging, operating rooms, coding and abstracting, interfaces and message brokers, transcription, and other clinical and administrative services. Understanding how changes in one area affect other systems and workflows is an important part of the role.

Some days will focus on resolving an immediate operational issue; others may involve planning an upgrade, improving a workflow or supporting a project.

Leading and working alongside your team

This is a working lead role. Alongside providing day-to-day leadership and supervision, you'll remain hands-on as a senior Information Systems subject-matter expert, working directly on complex application issues, system changes, upgrades and projects.

Success in the role means being comfortable moving between supporting staff, solving technical problems and working with clinicians, operational leaders, technical teams and vendors.

Why this work matters

The systems supported by this team are integral to how care is delivered across Yukon Hospitals. They help register patients, document care, communicate clinical information, schedule services, manage orders and results, and support diagnostic and treatment processes.

The team's work directly supports patient care, timely access to patient information and effective hospital operations, providing an opportunity to see the impact of your work from the systems you support through to their frontline use.

What you'll bring

We're looking for someone with strong MEDITECH experience, a solid understanding of healthcare information systems, and experience providing leadership and support to a team.

The successful candidate will bring:

• A degree in Health Informatics, Nursing, Information Systems or a related field, combined with several years of healthcare information systems experience. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered;

• Demonstrated experience providing leadership or supervision to staff;

• Deep knowledge of MEDITECH applications, workflows and processes, ideally with experience across Administrative, Clinical and Financial applications;

• Experience supporting complex healthcare information systems, including application configuration, testing, implementations, upgrades and optimization;

• An understanding of clinical and administrative workflows and the dependencies and integrations between healthcare systems;

• Strong analytical, troubleshooting and problem-solving skills;

• The ability to translate clinical and business requirements into practical recommendations and solutions; and

• Strong communication and relationship-building skills with clinicians, physicians, operational leaders, technical teams and vendors.

While deep MEDITECH experience is important, we're also looking for someone who can quickly understand unfamiliar systems, dependencies and clinical workflows.

Working at Yukon Hospitals

This position is based in Whitehorse and supports information systems across our hospitals in Whitehorse, Dawson City and Watson Lake.

Working in a smaller health system provides an opportunity to work across a broad range of clinical and corporate services. Rather than owning one narrow MEDITECH module or application area, the Information Systems Lead works across interconnected systems, builds relationships directly with clinical teams and can see the impact of their work from implementation through frontline use.

The role includes occasional travel to our hospitals for training and system work, as well as potential travel outside Yukon for training or conferences.

Relocation assistance may be available for eligible candidates. Employees also benefit from a Yukon bonus, defined-benefit pension plan and professional development opportunities, along with practical perks such as free on-site parking and an on-site cafeteria.

If you're an experienced MEDITECH professional who enjoys working with people, solving difficult problems and improving the technology behind patient care, we'd like you to consider joining our team.

The role includes occasional travel to our hospitals for training and system work, as well as potential travel outside Yukon for training or conferences. Working in a 24/7 hospital setting requires this role to be part of an on-call rotation as well as the occasional weekend and evening work to support upgrades and downtime work.
