Summary:

The Risk & Claims Manager is the person who ensures that every F&B team member with an active workers’ compensation claim or a work restriction is managed with care, consistency, and the discipline that protects both the individual and the organization. Every injured team member who has a clear point of contact throughout their claim, every modified duty placement that gets a crew member back to contributing before full medical release, every claim that closes at the right outcome because someone was actively managing it from day one — this role is accountable for those outcomes. The descriptions below are representative of, but not limited to, the duties and responsibilities for this position.

Key Roles of the Risk & Claims Manager:

Active Claim Management & Team Member Advocacy

Manages all active workers’ compensation claims from intake through closure.

• Serves as the primary point of contact for injured team members — ensures they understand the claims process, have access to appropriate medical care, and are treated with the dignity F&B’s values require.

• Monitors claim status, treatment progress, and work status updates; communicates proactively with injured team members throughout their recovery rather than waiting for them to initiate contact.

• An injured team member who feels uninformed or unsupported is not an acceptable outcome regardless of the financial status of the claim.

Return-to-Work & Modified Duty Coordination

Leads F&B’s return-to-work program with disciplined placement discipline.

• Identifies modified duty opportunities for team members with work restrictions; coordinates placement with field supervisors and operational leaders and communicates restriction parameters clearly to all parties.

• Develops and maintains modified duty job offerings across F&B’s operational functions; follows up regularly to ensure placements are working and restrictions are being honored.

• A team member who is medically able to perform modified duty and is sitting at home is a return-to-work failure — this role closes that gap proactively.

Work Restriction & Accommodation Tracking

Maintains accurate, current records of all team members with active work restrictions.

• Tracks restriction parameters, expiration dates, treating physician instructions, and accommodation status across all regions; communicates restriction changes to supervisors and HR promptly when medical status updates are received.

• Coordinates with HR on ADA and FMLA intersections with workers’ compensation leaves.

• A supervisor who allows a restricted team member to perform work outside their restriction because this role did not communicate a change is a documentation and communication failure.

Claims Documentation & Carrier Coordination

Maintains complete and accurate claim files and coordinates with carriers and TPAs.

• Ensures incident reports, medical records, treatment authorizations, work status notes, and correspondence are organized and current in the claims management system.

• Coordinates with the workers’ compensation carrier or TPA on claim status, treatment authorizations, medical management, and adjuster communications.

• Provides the Director of Risk Management with regular claim status summaries, emerging exposure flags, and documentation needed for reserve reviews and carrier meetings.

Incident Response Coordination

Coordinates F&B’s response to workplace injuries from the moment of report.

• Ensures the incident is documented accurately, the injured team member accesses appropriate medical care promptly, and the workers’ compensation carrier is notified within required timeframes.

• Partners with the Safety team on incident investigation so the cause of injury informs both the claim and the prevention response.

• First-report-of-injury quality sets the trajectory of every claim — this role ensures that trajectory starts well.

Leave & Absence Coordination

Coordinates workers’ compensation leave with HR-administered leave programs.

• Ensures FMLA is designated concurrently when applicable; communicates leave status and return dates to HR and payroll; flags situations where leave intersection requires HR or legal guidance.

• Maintains clear records of leave periods, return-to-work dates, and accommodation status; ensures payroll has accurate information on leave pay status for workers’ compensation benefit coordination.

Supervisor & Field Leadership Support

Serves as the primary resource for field supervisors managing team members with active claims or restrictions.

• Provides clear, timely guidance on what a restricted team member can and cannot do, how to document accommodation compliance, and how to respond when a team member’s condition changes.

• Builds the operational awareness among field leaders that early reporting, modified duty engagement, and consistent communication produce better outcomes for team members and for F&B.

Program Reporting & Director Support

Provides the Director of Risk Management with regular reporting on the active claims portfolio.

• Delivers active claim counts, claim status summaries, return-to-work metrics, restricted team member population data, and emerging trends requiring Director attention.

• Supports the Director’s carrier meetings, reserve reviews, and program stewardship activities with accurate, organized claim data.

• Identifies patterns in claim frequency, duration, or injury type that suggest operational or safety interventions and escalates them to the Director and Safety team.

Education, Experience & Qualifications:

• 5+ years of workers’ compensation claims management experience with active caseload across multiple states

• Demonstrated return-to-work and modified duty program coordination in a field-intensive environment;

• Working knowledge of the FMLA, ADA, and workers’ compensation intersection

• Advanced experience with WC carrier or TPA coordination including treatment authorization and adjuster communication

• Advanced proficiency with claims management systems and case file documentation standards

• Ability to communicate clearly and compassionately with injured team members while maintaining documentation discipline.

• Strong knowledge of employment laws, compensation structures, and benefits administration.

• Bilingual (Spanish-speaking) preferred.

Travel:

Travel is required for this position- this could include but is not limited to professional development and regional office visits. F&B will compensate for travel when applicable.

As a Risk & Claims Manager, you will be subject to various work environments. These environments include office and field settings. Team Member must be comfortable with sitting for an extended period.
