About this role
Join us as we work to create a thriving ecosystem that delivers accessible, high-quality, and sustainable healthcare for all.
Join athenahealth as a Senior Software Engineer on athenaCollector, where you'll design and build scalable, secure, and maintainable software that powers our revenue cycle management (RCM) platform. This role is built for engineers who see AI-assisted development as the standard toolkit for moving faster without sacrificing quality, and already rethinking how specs, code review, testing, and delivery work in an AI-augmented pipeline. We are looking for someone who can bring that thinking to a team solving real problems in healthcare billing.
Team Summary athenaCollector automates the essential back-office processes behind claims cycles, billing, RCM, and the operational plumbing that helps healthcare providers get paid accurately and on time. We're actively evolving how we build: shifting from manual, ticket-by-ticket implementation toward a spec-first, AI-accelerated workflow where engineers focus on domain correctness, architecture, and edge cases. You'll work closely with product, design, QA, and SRE to ship features that materially improve claims processing and financial outcomes for provider clients.
Essential Job Responsibilities
• Work spec-first: translate clear specifications and acceptance criteria into well-tested, reviewable changes and push for sharper upstream requirements, so AI tooling and human review both operate faster and with less ambiguity. • Use AI coding assistants and agentic tools (e.g., Claude Code, Codex or similar) throughout the SDLC for scaffolding, code generation, test authoring, and first-pass code review while retaining full ownership of correctness, security, and maintainability of everything that ships. • Critically evaluate, debug, and refine AI-generated code and tests against domain requirements, security standards, and system constraints. • Prototype LLM-assisted features for internal developer productivity and client-facing product capabilities, and help define safe, usable patterns for applying AI within a healthcare-regulated environment. • Build deep domain expertise in claims and RCM to accelerate ticket triage, dependency mapping, and cross-team coordination. • Contribute to and evolve team practices, like design reviews, feature readouts, agile ceremonies, code review norms, testing strategy. • Mentor engineers on effective and responsible use of AI tools, including prompt design, verifying outputs, and knowing when not to rely on AI.
Additional Job Responsibilities
• Support integration and deployment using AWS EC2, Docker, and Kubernetes, using AI tooling to accelerate infrastructure-as-code work (e.g., Terraform). • Explore and apply technologies such as GraphQL and Cadence to extend product capabilities. • Use AI-assisted approaches to strengthen testing strategy, including automated unit/integration test generation and coverage analysis. • Monitor application performance and use AI-assisted tooling to speed up troubleshooting and root-cause analysis. • Stay current on emerging AI-assisted development practices and evaluate which are worth adopting on the team.
Expected Education & Experience
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent experience. • 4+ years of engineering experience in a product development organization. • Solid backend experience in Java and Spring Boot. • Demonstrated, hands-on use of AI coding assistants or agentic dev tools (e.g., Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cursor) in a real production workflow, not just casual experimentation. • Genuine motivation to adopt and improve AI-driven workflows, comfort with prompt iteration, evaluating and correcting AI-generated code. • Ability to critically assess AI output. • Experience with PostgreSQL, AWS EC2, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, GraphQL is desirable. • Hands-on ReactJS experience is a plus. • Experience working in Agile development environments, ideally actively adapting their process for AI-assisted delivery.
Expected Compensation $119,000 - $203,000The base salary range shown reflects the full range for this role from minimum to maximum. At athenahealth, base pay depends on multiple factors, including job-related experience, relevant knowledge and skills, how your qualifications compare to others in similar roles, and geographical market rates. Base pay is only one part of our competitive Total Rewards package - depending on role eligibility, we offer both short and long-term incentives by way of an annual discretionary bonus plan, variable compensation plan, and equity plans.
