Job Description: The Job/What You’ll Do:
The Director of Advanced Planning plays a critical role within AssetMark’s Wealth Solutions group. You will influence the strategic direction, development, and delivery of comprehensive financial planning and estate strategies for high-net-worth (HNW) & ultra-high-net-worth (UHNW) clients and advisors across the organization. In this highly visible position, you will partner cross-functionally to shape and evolve AssetMark’s planning capabilities, provide thought leadership in complex estate and business succession planning, and ensure an exceptional advisor and client experience.
Responsibilities:
• Ensures AssetMark philosophy and process is maintained and continually enhanced • Provide unbiased, customized wealth planning guidance to clients and prospective clients, based on deep client discovery and understanding • Manages the team to ensure workload is completed in a timely and efficient manner • Collaborates with and helps develop career growth for team members • Identify analytical tools required to enhance the process and how efficiencies can be attained • Identify new planning & estate solutions for inclusion on the AssetMark platform • Oversees responses to all requests and questions and hosts presentations to financial advisors and sales team in person and via webinars • Creation and distribution of written reports • Lead the vision and execution for financial and estate planning strategy across the organization, aligned with broader company goals • Oversee the delivery of high-impact, HNW & UHNW financial plans, including retirement income, tax mitigation, estate transfer, business transitions, asset protection, and complex wealth strategies • Serve as a key thought partner to senior leadership and external stakeholders, contributing to firm-wide planning standards, best practices, and innovation • Direct cross-functional collaboration with Product, Sales, and Marketing to enhance and integrate planning solutions into advisor offerings • Influence and co-present on complex planning topics, both internally and externally, including with advisory boards, councils, and strategic partners • Lead and mentor a team of senior financial planners; provide guidance on technical planning, client engagement, and professional growth • Use JD and CFP® expertise to design and deliver tax- and estate-efficient planning frameworks, tools, and educational resources • Develop scalable processes and frameworks that improve consistency, efficiency, and impact of the planning function • Serve as a senior-level contact for escalated, complex advisor cases and unique client needs • Champion innovation and continuous improvement in planning technology (e.g., eMoney, Holistiplan, SS Analyzer) and process design • Work with advisors to develop business opportunities with new and existing clients • Be comfortable working with high net worth and ultra-high net worth individuals/families, and have experience with financial planning, banking, investments, tax and wealth transfer strategies • Collaborate on the development and presentation of wealth strategies and advice materials that support advisor and client decision-making
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Proficiency with financial planning tools (e.g., eMoney, MoneyGuidePro, Holistiplan) and CRM platforms such as Salesforce • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with experience presenting at senior leadership and client levels • Strong business acumen and ability to navigate ambiguity, balance competing priorities, and influence without authority
Education & Experience:
• Bachelor’s and advanced degree (e.g., JD, MST, MBA) required • Active CFP® and CPA certifications required • 10+ years of financial planning experience, including complex HNW/UHNW client engagements and cross-functional strategic projects • Proven expertise in estate planning, tax strategy, and business transitions
Compensation: The base salary range for this position in high cost-of-living markets (San Francisco Bay Area, New York Metro, and Washington, DC Metro areas) is $230,000 – $265,000. For all other U.S. locations, the base salary range is $200,000 – $230,000 These ranges reflect the base salary AssetMark reasonably expects to pay for this position, based on factors including job-related knowledge, skills, education, experience, and work location. This position is also eligible for additional variable incentive compensation and a competitive benefits package. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the US to be considered. We are unable to provide visa sponsorship for this position.
