About this role

Job summary

Microbiology Services for the NCA are provided by two laboratories one at the Royal Oldham Hospital and one at Salford Royal Hospital. Primarily based at the Royal Oldham Hospital this opportunity has arisen for a Biomedical Scientist to join this busy but friendly department to support service delivery.

We have ISO 15189:2022 accreditation ; have IBMS training laboratory status and process approximately 1,000,000 specimens per annum, with a broad repertoire of diagnostic testing, including general bacteriology, molecular, parasitology, and serology with a number of automated systems including antibiotic susceptibility testing, blood cultures, MALDI-ToF and molecular equipment. Continuous professional development is actively encouraged with regular in-house meetings.

The department operates 07:00-20:00 Monday-Friday and 07:00-17:00 weekends and Bank Holidays with a three shift system earlies, cores and lates; there is an on-call service outside core hours. It is important to note that if you are successful, you will be required to participate in all rosters when competent i.e. weekend, bank holidays and out-of-hours services.

Main duties of the job

To complement our excellent team further we are looking for an enthusiastic innovative and highly motivated individual committed to providing a high quality service to join us in this very busy department.

You should have good technical expertise, a sound knowledge of diagnostic microbiology, with excellent organisational, communications and interpersonal skills.

You should be either registered with the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC), or have evidence of eligibility and have completed the IBMS registration portfolio/ equivalent.

For the Band 6 position you should have either the IBMS specialist portfolio, or equivalent qualifications and/ or able to demonstrate equivalent experience.

Please note that we are currently not able to consider employment of trainee Biomedical Scientists i.e. applicants without the above requirements.
