Job summary The Infection Prevention Nurse at St Lukes Hospice is responsible for leading and improving infection prevention and control (IPC) standards across the organisation. Working within the Clinical Governance team, the post holder provides specialist IPC advice, supports patient safety initiatives, develops policies, delivers education and training, and helps ensure compliance with national guidance and best practice. The role combines strategic leadership, quality improvement, audit, data analysis, and clinical practice.
Main duties of the job Lead infection prevention and control audits and quality improvement projects. Develop, implement, review, and update IPC policies and procedures. Provide expert infection control advice and guidance to staff across the hospice. Support outbreak management, surveillance activities, and post-infection reviews. Analyse infection control data, identify trends, and contribute to organisational learning. Deliver IPC training, education, and awareness programmes. Chair Infection Prevention and Control meetings and contribute to governance reports. Maintain professional networks and ensure practice reflects current national guidance. Undertake 1 to 2 clinical shifts per month within the Inpatient Centre to maintain clinical competence and support patient care.

Job description Job responsibilities The Infection Prevention Nurse is accountable for providing specialist infection prevention and control leadership throughout St Lukes Hospice. Responsibilities include monitoring compliance with IPC standards, conducting audits and investigations, producing reports, supporting governance processes, delivering staff education, managing infection-related incidents and outbreaks, and advising on best practice. The post holder will work closely with senior clinical leaders, contribute to patient safety and quality improvement initiatives, maintain up-to-date knowledge of infection prevention guidance, and provide direct clinical support through regular shifts in the hospices Inpatient Centre.
