About this role

The Community Service Division’s Special Municipal Constable (SMC) program includes both Jail Guard and Community Safety Officer (CSO) positions. This position is on-call, as-needed, with no regular hours of work.

Auxiliary SMCs wear distinct police uniforms and are not equipped with firearms and work on an on-call basis to backfill jailer and CSO vacancies. Where possible, Auxiliary SMC shifts are scheduled in advance.

Jail Guards are responsible for the care of persons in custody and their property. CSOs provide operational assistance to front line officers, assist the public at events and at VicPD’s front desk.

Jail Guard Job Description:

• Uniform position working up to 12-hour day or night shift.

• Maintain jail facility and report hazards and concerns. Monitor persons in custody and provide care and meals. Dispense prescription medications

• Effectively de-escalate, communicate and interact with persons in custody

• Search prisoners, manage prisoner movements and document actions to criminal court standard. Assist with virtual bail hearings as required

• Conduct prisoner intake, documenting health and safety concerns

• Enter information into PRIME and receive information from police systems

• Account, safekeep and return property to those entering and leaving custody

• Assist Police Officers in the jail and respond to all jail incidents including medical events. Serve as First Aid attendant for VicPD employees.

• Where reasonable and necessary, manage persons in custody in accordance with VicPD policy, the Criminal Code and the National Use of Force Framework

Community Safety Officer Job Description:

• Uniform position working up to 12-hour shifts (variable times).

• Assist the public with requests and reports at the Front Desk. Collect and enter pertinent information into PRIME. Serve subpoenas and summons

• Assist front line officers with tasks including CCTV collection, perimeter security at police incidents, and property transport and management

• Provide a uniform presence at public and community events

• Aid or provide relief in the Jail as required

Preferred Qualifications:

• Team player with excellent interpersonal and organizational skills

• Resilient, patient and flexible individual, motivated to help others

• Self-starter with ability to succeed in a high stress work environment

• Have a genuine interest working with people experiencing mental health and addictions related crises

• Ability to gather and recall relevant details about an incident, and write detailed accurate reports and notes

Successful candidates will receive training held at VicPD which includes classroom, practical, field training shifts, and job shadowing.

Auxiliary employees are eligible to apply for full-time jailer and CSO positions when available.

$33.75/hour
