Who You Are

You are a highly organized and motivated environmental professional who is passionate about protecting the land, water, wildlife, and traditional territory of Mikisew Cree First Nation. You bring strong leadership, coordination, and communication skills, along with experience managing environmental monitoring activities in both office and field settings. You are comfortable coordinating field operations, supervising CBM Guardians, organizing logistics, maintaining accurate records, and ensuring monitoring activities are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with established protocols.

As the Community Based Monitoring (CBM) Coordinator, you will play a key role in supporting environmental stewardship initiatives and community-based monitoring programs throughout Fort Chipewyan and the surrounding traditional territory. You are a collaborative problem-solver who values safety, accountability, cultural awareness, and teamwork. The ideal candidate has experience working with Indigenous communities, understands the importance of Indigenous Knowledge and environmental stewardship, and is committed to building positive relationships with Elders, Knowledge Holders, land users, community members, and project partners while supporting the goals and priorities of Mikisew Cree First Nation.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Coordinate Community Based Monitoring (CBM) field activities in Fort Chipewyan and surrounding areas, including water, soil, sediment, snow, ice, wildlife, vegetation, and other environmental monitoring activities.

• Prepare field schedules, calendars, work plans, and daily task assignments for CBM Guardians.

• Coordinate and supervise the day-to-day activities of CBM Guardians.

• Organize field logistics including vehicles, boats, snowmobiles, safety equipment, sampling supplies, coolers, shipping, and communication plans.

• Coordinate sample collection, labeling, preservation, storage, shipping, and chain of custody requirements.

• Maintain field records, sampling forms, photographs, GPS locations, data sheets, calendars, and program documentation.

• Track equipment, inventory, maintenance requirements, calibration records, and supplies.

• Support onboarding, training, coaching, and development of CBM team members.

• Enter, organize, and maintain CBM data using Microsoft Excel and other approved systems.

• Review field forms and data entries for completeness, accuracy, and consistency.

• Prepare field summaries, reports, meeting notes, and program updates.

• Support community engagement activities involving Elders, Knowledge Holders, youth, land users, and community members.

• Coordinate monitoring camps, community events, and program participation opportunities.

• Ensure all monitoring activities follow approved sampling plans, standard operating procedures, and safety requirements.

• Promote a respectful, professional, and safety-focused work environment.

• Identify and report safety concerns, delays, equipment issues, or data quality concerns to the Environmental Manager.

• Represent the CBM Program in a professional manner while following MCFN protocols and GIR direction.

• Perform other related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

• Diploma or degree in Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Technology, Biology, Indigenous Environmental Monitoring, or a related field. Equivalent education and experience may be considered.

• Experience coordinating environmental fieldwork, logistics, schedules, or monitoring activities.

• Experience supervising, leading, or coordinating a small team.

• Experience collecting environmental samples including water, soil, and sediment samples.

• Knowledge of sample handling, chain of custody procedures, and environmental monitoring protocols.

• Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Outlook, Word, and digital scheduling systems.

• Experience maintaining records, databases, reports, and field documentation.

• Strong verbal and written communication skills.

• Experience working with Indigenous communities and understanding Indigenous Knowledge and cultural protocols.

• Understanding of Mikisew Cree First Nation culture, values, and community priorities is considered an asset.

• Ability to understand and speak Cree is considered an asset.

• Experience with GPS units, field data collection applications, GIS tools, or environmental monitoring equipment is considered an asset.

Other Requirements

• Must be based in Fort Chipewyan, Alberta, or willing to relocate.

• Must possess a valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence.

• Must be willing and able to travel by road, boat, snowmobile, and aircraft as required.

• Must be willing to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays when operationally required.

• Must provide a satisfactory Criminal Record Check.

• Must be physically capable of supporting field activities and handling field equipment and supplies safely.

• Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information appropriately.

• Preference may be given to Mikisew Cree First Nation members and/or applicants with strong knowledge of Fort Chipewyan and MCFN traditional territory.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

• Work is performed in both office and field environments.

• Regular travel throughout Fort Chipewyan and surrounding traditional territory is required.

• Exposure to varying weather conditions, remote locations, wildlife, watercraft travel, and outdoor environmental conditions.

• Frequent use of computers and data management systems.

• Occasional lifting and carrying of field equipment, sampling supplies, coolers, and monitoring gear.

• Flexible scheduling may be required to support seasonal monitoring activities, community events, and operational priorities.

• The position requires adherence to all MCFN, GIR, and occupational health and safety policies and procedures.
