About this role
We are seeking an experienced TMT/IT lawyer with 8 or more years' legal experience to join our market-leading Technology, Media and Telecommunications team in Auckland, New Zealand.
This is a fantastic opportunity to work alongside recognised experts in the field, including partners Allan Yeoman and Keri Johansson, and four other talented lawyers ranging from newly admitted to senior associate. The team is ranked Tier 1 for TMT and data protection in the major legal directories and has a great reputation for practical, commercially savvy advice, strong client relationships and a collaborative approach.
More about our TMT team
As a Senior Associate in the team, you will advise blue-chip private and public sector organisations, technology start-ups, private equity and venture capital firms, broadcasting and media entities, and health agencies. Clients span New Zealand and the broader Asia-Pacific region and provide complex, high-quality TMT work.
You will work across the full spectrum of TMT, including procurement and supply, commercial contracting, digital development and licensing, privacy and cyber, media and entertainment, marketing, and content production and acquisition. You will also work closely with Buddle Findlay's corporate M&A team on tech and telco sector transactions, providing specialist input on significant matters. The work is varied, complex and genuinely interesting.
In this senior role, you will have the opportunity to take ownership of matters, work directly with clients, mentor more junior team members, contribute to business development initiatives and continue building your profile in a specialist and fast-moving area of law.
What is important to us
We look for people who bring a different perspective, who are ambitious, curious and innovative. Our ideal candidate would:
• have 8+ years' TMT-focused legal experience gained within a law firm or in-house environment
• be confident advising on a range of TMT matters (seeking input from others as needed), ideally including technology procurement, commercial contracting, privacy, data protection and cyber
• enjoy working collaboratively, building strong client relationships and contributing to a supportive team culture
• be interested in developing your own profile and contributing to business development in the TMT sector
For overseas applicants, this is an opportunity to build your career in New Zealand while continuing to work on high-quality local, regional and international matters. Applicants will need to be admitted as a solicitor in New Zealand, Australia, the UK or a similar common law jurisdiction, and be willing and able to relocate to New Zealand.
