Main duties and responsibilities

About the Role

As a Technical Instructor, you will play a key role in supporting practical teaching sessions, laboratory-based learning and project work within biomedical and other engineering disciplines. You will be responsible for maintaining specialist biomedical engineering equipment, preparing laboratory activities, and providing guidance to students on the use of equipment and technical procedures.

You will contribute to the ongoing development of technical facilities and support innovation in teaching practices, ensuring that laboratories remain fit for purpose and aligned with industry standards.

Key Responsibilities

Support the delivery of practical teaching, laboratory sessions and project-based learning. Prepare, set up and maintain biomedical engineering laboratories and equipment. Provide technical instruction and guidance to students and staff. Ensure compliance with health and safety legislation, risk assessments and safe systems of work. Maintain laboratory equipment and coordinate servicing, calibration and repairs. Assist with the procurement and management of laboratory consumables, equipment and resources. Support student projects, final-year dissertations and research activities where appropriate. Contribute to the continuous improvement of laboratory practices, facilities and technical services. Undergo necessary training if required on medical equipment.

Role

We are looking for a proactive and student-focused individual with:

A degree, HND or equivalent qualification in Biomedical Engineering, Medical/Clinical Engineering, Electronics, Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline. Experience working with laboratory, engineering or medical technology / equipment. Knowledge of biomedical engineering principles and practical applications. Excellent organisational and problem-solving skills. Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with students, academic colleagues and external stakeholders. A commitment to health and safety and delivering high-quality technical support. Willingness to learn and professional development. Team player, and willingness to support open days.

Experience of working within higher education, healthcare technology, clinical engineering or a research environment would be advantageous
