About this role

Job summary

Reporting to the Head of Education and Workforce Development and working closely with the Deputy Chief Nursing Officer and Chair of the Resuscitation Committee, you will provide strategic leadership for resuscitation services across the Trust. This influential role offers the opportunity to shape policy, drive innovation, improve patient outcomes and ensure compliance with national standards for resuscitation.

As the Trust's designated expert adviser for resuscitation, you will lead a dedicated team and work collaboratively across clinical, education and governance services to deliver a high-quality, patient-centred resuscitation service.

Main duties of the job

The Lead Resuscitation Officer will be responsible, in conjunction with the Chair of the Resuscitation committee and the Head of Education, for the strategy and direction of the established resuscitation services across South Warwickshire University NHS Foundation Trust (SWFT).

The post holder will be responsible for providing expert advice, training, and oversight on all aspects of Resuscitation and management of the deteriorating patient, advising staff throughout the organisation on issues relating to training, equipment and incident management and prevention. They will lead the development and implementation of the Trust Resuscitation Policy and Procedures and will be advising appropriate managers and departments of compliance.

Job description Job responsibilities

Will have expert level adult and paediatric resuscitation knowledge, skills and experience and be able to advise the Trust on adherence to National Resuscitation Standards and recommend how these can be achieved locally.

Have excellent leadership and communication skills to manage the dayto-day responsibility as the designated resuscitation advisor for the Trust.

Will hold and maintain advanced level resuscitation qualifications and skills in order to lead and be part of cardiac arrests/ peri arrest call response, able to respond to medical emergencies and paediatric emergencies throughout all areas of the Trust as well as the emergency department alerts when appropriate.

To be able to act as a senior clinical role model and educator to support staff and quality assurance in emergency events.

Have a good understanding of risk, governance and compliance aspects. Contribute to Risk Assessments as needed.

Work collaboratively with other teams within the Trust to ensure that we comply with National guidelines as well as local targets for our compliance to statutory and mandatory and essential training.

Be skilled problem solver in relation to critical and time pressured issues seeking out collaborative partners and allies to ensure that safety is upheld.

Have excellent mentorship skills to support and develop the resuscitation service workforce.

Be responsive, empathetic and embed a culture of wellbeing and psychological safety amongst the team.

Have a practical knowledge and understanding of planning, organising and implementing resuscitation training of all levels as a managed schedule. Coordinate with Medical Education and Training, Course Faculty members, and external providers as needed.

Be able to present complex data and reports to high level groups within the organisation.

Understand the NHS budget and procurement processes.

Have a strong sense of responsibility, accountability and bravery to support the trust and provide an ethical patient focused service.

Be a reflective practitioner, able to work autonomously and as part of a team.

Offer highly specialised sound clinical advice to staff involved in emergency situations with regard to latest research evidence.

Be able to demonstrate a high standard of post event hot (STOP 5) and cold debriefing skills.

Key Responsibilities

Formulate and contribute to long term and strategic plans to deliver aims of the Trust with regards to prevention of and the management of cardiac arrest events.

Corporate responsibility for the implementation and development of resuscitation policy and procedures throughout the Trust.

Interpret and implement national and local Policies and Guidelines to enable effective resuscitation at all levels, establishing how these should be interpreted.

Make recommendations to the Resuscitation Committee and the Head of Education to enable policy to evolve to show best practice.

Liaise with national bodies (e.g. Resuscitation Council UK; Advanced Life Support Group, Manchester, Sepsis Trust, ReSPECT) and other relevant organisations.

Work collaboratively with other health care professionals and groups to deliver training to support the skills necessary for recognition and response to deteriorating patient and resuscitation ensuring compliance with national standards e.g. NHS England, CQC, Resuscitation Council UK. ReSPECT

Ensure that ICT is utilised and coordinate with Learning and Development to ensure an adequate record and certification of those trained in resuscitation techniques in accordance with National standards is readily available.

Actively seek innovative ways of improving efficiency and standards of the resuscitation service and develop proposals for consideration by Resuscitation, Safety or other trust committees.

Membership of Trust Resuscitation Committee.

To lead the monitoring of clinical incidents and audit in relation to hospital and Community cardiopulmonary resuscitations involving SWFT staff,

Investigate incidents relating to ReSPECT process, Do Not Attempt Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation decisions, Resuscitation Equipment and the investigation of any problems or difficulties using these as a basis for improving resuscitation care.

Support investigation response to incidents relating to escalation of a deteriorating patient.

Prepare and present reports for Resuscitation Committee, Quality, Governance and Safety Committees and site-specific groups and be able to communicate strategic information to ensure best practice.

Collaboration with and education of the members of the emergency teams, Porters, Security and Telephonists to ensure the smooth and efficient operation of the emergency team provision.

Work with Capital and Estates programmes and service redesign to ensure safe and effective deployment of emergency processes and equipment in all areas. Provide highly specialised advice with regard to the sighting, location and contents of the emergency trolley/ grab bag, emergency equipment and devices and emergency drug box contents in line with National Standards.

Lead in the procurement, evaluation and implementation of new equipment/devices (e.g defibrillators and suction machines) and deliver reports regarding suitability of proposed changes.

Liaise with medical and nursing staff to ensure suitable equipment is in place to meet resuscitation needs and standards.

Liaise with the emergency services, and other outside agencies, on matters relating to resuscitation where required.

Contribute to the development of the practice of resuscitation through research, education and clinical practice. Participate in local and national audit. Review practice against updated national guidance.

Deliver presentations with regards to the Escalation of the Deteriorating Patient and Resuscitation policy and procedures (and other subjects as required) to all grades of medical and nursing staff. This may also include non-clinical staff within the Trust, other external professional bodies, and members of the general public. This will involve passing on highly complex and potentially sensitive material to groups, while ensuring that issues are understood.

Trust Lead and regional link for ReSPECT documentation and process and relevant audits.

Budgetary and Resource Management

The post holder will be expected to:

Effectively manage the department course and office budgets.

Work collaboratively with finance to ensure that pay and non-pay budgets are well managed, and issues are escalated appropriately.

Constantly strive for value for money and great efficiency in the use of budgets and to ensure that they operate in recurrent financial balance year on year.

Oversee, advise and contribute to the development and implementation of a system of central provision and distribution of itray resuscitation equipment, ensuring consistent, safe and cost-effective provision.

Provide finance reports to the Head of Resuscitation Education and Operations as required.

Contribute and assist with writing business cases as required.

Oversee, contribute and preserve systems by which clinical and educational equipment is maintained, fit for purpose and available for loan and accounted for.

There is an occasional requirement to exert moderate physical effort for several short periods during a shift. Manoeuvres patients, use of hoists/lifting of equipment some of which will be substantial There is an occasional requirement for concentration where the work pattern is unpredictable. Interruptions to planned work can occur and does include responding to an emergency bleep across sites. Frequent exposure to distressing or emotional circumstances.
