Position Description The Automation Engineering Co-Op supports plant and corporate manufacturing engineering teams by assisting with the design, scoping, testing, and implementation of automated manufacturing systems. This role offers hands-on experience in process automation, industrial robotics, control systems, and continuous improvement within a lean manufacturing framework. Working under the guidance of experienced Mechatronics and Manufacturing Engineers, the Co-Op will contribute to active automation projects across manufacturing facilities. The position is structured to build technical expertise in machine controls, robotics, and process optimization while fostering collaborative, mentor-mentee learning relationships. Key Responsibilities Automation Project Support: Assist with designing, scoping, launching, and validating automated equipment, robotic cells, and manufacturing technology packages. Controls & Robotics Exposure: Gain hands-on exposure to PLC programming, machine logic, industrial robotics (e.g., 6-axis, AGVs/AMRs), and sensor/vision system integration under technical mentorship. Data & Process Analysis: Support data collection, cycle time analysis, process planning, and troubleshooting to evaluate system performance and continuous improvement progress. Testing & Launch Assistance: Participate in prototype testing, trial runs, cell launch validation, and troubleshooting of computerized and automated machinery. Documentation & Standardization: Prepare and update technical documentation, standard work procedures, functional specifications, and engineering drawings. Lean & Continuous Improvement: Participate in continuous improvement initiatives, operationalized lean processes, safety audits, and structured coaching patterns (e.g., 5Q Kata). Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner effectively with cross-functional teams, including manufacturing, quality, plant engineering, and operations leadership. Mentorship & Development: Engage actively in structured mentor-mentee relationships to develop practical engineering competencies aligned with academic studies. Required Education & Qualifications 0–1 year of engineering-related experience, including academic projects or prior internship exposure. Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related technical discipline Foundational understanding of engineering principles related to manufacturing, mechanical design, electronics, or automated systems. Familiarity with common engineering tools and concepts (e.g., CAD software, PLC basics, robotics concepts, data analysis software, or lab instrumentation). Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills. Effective written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate in team environments. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage assigned tasks to meet project deadlines.
