Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an exceptional Pharmacy Technician leader to become our first Professional Lead for Pharmacy Technician Practice. This newly created, highly strategic role offers a rare opportunity to influence the future direction of Pharmacy Technician practice across one of the largest and most progressive pharmacy services in the country.

As the Trust's senior professional lead for Pharmacy Technicians and Pharmacy Support Workers, you will drive professional leadership, workforce transformation, advanced practice development and professional governance across acute, specialist, community and system-wide services. You will play a pivotal role in delivering our Pharmacy & Medicines Optimisation Strategy, developing innovative models of care and enabling technicians to work to the full extent of their skills and expertise.

Working alongside senior pharmacy and organisational leaders, you will champion excellence in patient care, professional practice, education, sustainability and inclusion, while helping to shape the future pharmacy workforce.

Main duties of the job

Reporting to the Deputy Chief Pharmacist, this role provides strategic leadership and professional oversight for Pharmacy Technicians and Pharmacy Support Workers across Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust. The post holder will lead the development of professional practice, workforce capability and governance, ensuring the profession is equipped to meet future service needs and maximise its contribution to patient care, medicines optimisation and organisational performance. As a senior member of the Pharmacy Directorate Leadership Team, the post holder will influence strategy, service transformation and workforce development across a diverse and complex organisation.

Key responsibilities include:

Providing strategic leadership for Pharmacy Technician practice across the Trust. Leading professional governance, standards and scope of practice development. Driving workforce transformation and advanced practice development Developing career pathways, leadership programmes and workforce capability. Influencing service redesign, innovation and new models of care. Leading strategic programmes relating to sustainability, inclusion and reducing health inequalities. Building effective partnerships across the Trust, health system and professional networks. Representing the Directorate at local, regional and national level.

The post holder will provide professional leadership for Pharmacy Technicians and Pharmacy Support Workers across the Trust and be responsible for the development of safe, effective and innovative professional practice.

Responsibilities will include:

Leading the development and implementation of professional standards, governance arrangements and competency frameworks for Pharmacy Technician practice. Supporting the development of advanced, specialist and extended scope roles, ensuring appropriate training, credentialing and professional oversight. Working with pharmacy teams and multidisciplinary colleagues to identify opportunities to optimise workforce utilisation and improve patient care. Providing expert professional advice on Pharmacy Technician practice, professional standards, workforce development and service transformation. Supporting the delivery of education, training, leadership development and career progression opportunities for Pharmacy Technicians and Pharmacy Support Workers. Leading and supporting quality improvement, service development and transformation programmes across pharmacy services. Promoting a culture of professional accountability, innovation, continuous improvement and evidence-based practice. Contributing to medicines optimisation, medicines safety, operational productivity and sustainability initiatives across the Directorate. Developing effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including NHS organisations, professional bodies and system partners. Representing the Directorate on relevant Trust, regional and national groups, committees and networks. Providing direct leadership to designated staff and professional leadership to the wider Pharmacy Technician workforce.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Registration Essential

Registered Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) Master's degree or equivalent experience in leadership, management, workforce development, quality improvement, education or a related discipline Evidence of ongoing continuing professional development and maintenance of professional competence

Desirable

Postgraduate leadership or management qualification Accredited Checking Pharmacy Technician (ACPT) qualification Membership of the Association of Pharmacy Technicians UK (APTUK) or equivalent professional body

Experience Essential

Significant senior leadership experience within NHS pharmacy services Significant experience providing professional leadership and professional governance for Pharmacy Technicians or other registered healthcare professionals Experience leading service transformation, workforce redesign or implementation of new models of care Experience developing advanced, specialist or extended scope professional roles Experience influencing organisational strategy and working effectively with senior leaders across professional and organisational boundaries

Desirable

Experience of developing services or initiatives that improve outcomes for people with learning disabilities, autistic people or underserved populations Experience leading or contributing to sustainability initiatives within healthcare

Knowledge Essential

Exert knowledge of NHS pharmacy services and the evolving role of Pharmacy Technicians and Pharmacy Support Workers Expert knowledge of professional, legal and regulatory frameworks governing Pharmacy Technician practice Understanding of equality, diversity and inclusion principles and their application within workforce development and service design Knowledge of national workforce priorities and policy relating to Pharmacy Technician practice
