Job Title: Phlebotomist IIJob DescriptionThis role performs a full range of phlebotomy duties in a fast-paced patient service setting, including blood collection, specimen handling, and related administrative tasks. The Phlebotomist II supports smooth workflow by troubleshooting issues, assisting with training, and recommending process improvements while delivering courteous, professional service to patients and clinical staff. Responsibilities • Perform venipuncture and other specimen collections, including blood draws, using straight needles and butterfly needles in a safe, accurate, and efficient manner. • Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture, blood draw procedures, and other specimen collections such as urine or fecal samples to patients, ensuring they understand the process and feel at ease. • Collect and store specimens according to established procedures and protocols to maintain specimen integrity. • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that all information is complete and accurate. • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by the test order, following specific protocol for each test. • Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the script or order to ensure 100% accuracy before processing. • Package specimens for transport, following all required procedures to maintain proper temperature and integrity during transit. • Store specimen samples at the required temperature and place them in the appropriate collection container or tube, accurately labeling each according to protocol. • Fully understand and interpret physicians’ orders to ensure correct tests are performed and specimens are handled appropriately. • Update patient information and related data in the system accurately and in a timely manner. • Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks as required to support safe and compliant laboratory operations. • Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and regulatory requirements. • Attend annual department trainings and maintain current knowledge of procedures, safety standards, and best practices. • Answer telephone calls, respond to inquiries, and read laboratory results to callers when appropriate and authorized. • Assist with troubleshooting workflow issues and make recommendations to improve efficiency and quality in the phlebotomy and specimen processing process. • Support training efforts by demonstrating proper phlebotomy techniques and procedures as needed. • Ensure all work areas remain clean, organized, and compliant with infection control and safety standards. • Participate in any additional duties related to patient service and specimen collection as assigned. Essential Skills • Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required. • Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting. • Demonstrated proficiency in phlebotomy, including venipuncture using straight needles and butterfly needles. • Experience performing blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, and handling specimen processing tasks. • Ability to collect, store, and handle specimens according to established procedures and protocols. • Strong attention to detail when matching laboratory requisitions to specimen tubes and verifying orders. • Ability to understand and accurately follow physicians’ orders for laboratory testing. • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite. • High school diploma or GED. • Approximately 2–4 years of overall experience in a related healthcare or laboratory environment. • Knowledge of and ability to comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and other safety standards. • Effective communication skills to clearly explain procedures and respond to patient and staff inquiries. • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced patient service or laboratory setting while maintaining accuracy and quality. Additional Skills & Qualifications • Experience working in a patient service site or outpatient collection setting. • Comfort with answering telephones, reading laboratory results, and providing information to callers when appropriate. • Ability to participate in and benefit from ongoing departmental training and professional development. • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple specimens, requisitions, and tasks simultaneously. • Capability to assist with troubleshooting workflow issues and suggesting process improvements. • Reliability and consistency in attending scheduled shifts, including early morning hours and Saturday coverage. • Professional and courteous demeanor when interacting with patients, clinicians, and colleagues. Work EnvironmentThis is a non-float Phlebotomist II position based at a patient service site in New York. The role follows a consistent schedule, with primary hours from 6:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Training takes place at the same location where the phlebotomist will work, providing continuity and familiarity with the site’s processes and equipment. The environment is fast-paced and patient-facing, with frequent direct interaction with patients for specimen collection. The position involves routine use of phlebotomy equipment such as straight needles, butterfly needles, centrifuges, and standard laboratory collection tubes and containers. Work is conducted in a clinical setting that emphasizes safety, cleanliness, and adherence to regulatory standards, including OSHA and DEP requirements. The dress code reflects a professional clinical environment, typically requiring appropriate healthcare attire suitable for patient contact and laboratory work. Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract position based out of Port Jefferson, NY. Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $25.16 - $25.16/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
