About this role
The position of Gardener works with plants, applying their knowledge to fruits, vegetables, ornamentals, and non-food crops to maximize their health or growth. They should be able to calculate growth rates and identify plants, plant pests and the ideal growth conditions for plants.
General Duties & Responsibilities:
• To carry out numerous gardening duties, requiring a minimum amount of supervision.
• Soil cultivation, digging, forking, mulching, watering, raking, weeding, edging, pruning, bed preparation and planting.
• Lawn maintenance and cultivation.
• The use and maintenance of hand tools and basic light machinery.
• The use of cylinder and rotary mowers, trimmers, leaf blowers.
• To ensure all equipment, machinery and buildings are secure.
• To keep the tool shed/mess room clean and tidy.
• To keep the borders, thoroughfares and highway footpaths clear and free from litter at all times.
• To empty litter bins around the property.
• To respond to emergency calls.
• Deal with pest problems that could damage plants.
• Prepare and plant rockeries, herbaceous borders and shrubberies.
• Plant and cultivate vegetables beds and fruit bearing trees.
• Follow all Health & Safety standards and procedures.
• Willing to work after hours and weekend work when required.
• Field Safety and Quality Control.
• Follow Health & Safety standards and procedures at all times.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
• Supervise a team of 6 staff members and growing.
• Responsible for the nursery and propagating all kinds of plants such as: trees, palms, native and conventional plants utilizing different techniques.
• Receive and store plants from overseas.
• Takes care of the chicken coup, with more than 100 layers and of eggs for the Brasserie kitchen.
• Takes care of land like Dog Park, Savannah Orchard, Stone Wall and Maoist sound by providing landscaping, maintenance, keeping plants alive and treat diseases on hives and bees.
• Works at the Coconut farm, oversee 200+ coconut palm. Transform farm to organic while also working on the transformation of soil in agriculture form.
• Produce with organic products for the Brasserie such as; honey, candles, balm, lip gloss, scrubs etc.
• Helps with events setup of tables and décor with flowers and plants, leaves etc.
• Participate on evaluating and assessing employees' performance.
• Schedule employees work week and arrange vacation/leave.
• Give tours and teach students and others about the Brasserie, our production of process of food, how we compost, etc.
• Produces more than 50 kinds of vegetables for the restaurant and utilizing areas around Cricket Square to produce.
• Works closely with designer from Miss Margaret Bardwick and Aide developed the landscaping areas around Cricket Square and its properties.
• Develops and design untouched areas as well within Cricket Square.
• Identifies diseases around plants and treat accordingly.
• Supervises all landscaping contractor work such as Power Flowers (works hand-in-hand with them) to ensure the job is completed to standards.
• Check and coordinate the plants with irrigation, soil (tasting soil), plant orders and fertilizers.
• Do inventories of plants and supplies needed.
• Collect insects to identify and determine if they are a problem.
• Control pest, chickens, iguanas and agoutis.
• Takes care of the Brasserie organic garden.
This position is open to Caymanians, Permanent Residents or RERC Holders only. Applicants must provide two verifiable references and a valid police clearance issued within the past six months. The successful candidate will be required to work 45 hours per week, including evening shifts and weekends. $8.75 - $14.00 per hour
