Doctors without Borders (MSF) is an international, independent, medical humanitarian organisation committed to two objectives: providing medical assistance to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, healthcare exclusion, natural and man-made disasters; and speaking out about the plight of the populations assisted. Main Purpose
Perform counselling and/or education sessions following different medical and mental health MSF – MOH protocols and procedures, in order to improve their psychosocial condition for migrants, refugees and communities affected by xenophobia in Johannesburg.
Key Responsibilities
• Identify the psychosocial, socio-economic and administrative needs for Immigrants
• Actively promote the availability of counselling services and carry out, individual or in group counselling, basic psycho educational sessions, to Immigrants, their families (when needed), in order to alleviate their psychosocial difficulties within the project scope.
• Refer patients to other specialists or other institutions for further assistance, when necessary, in order to provide the best support available.
• Participate in the creation of any material needed for counselling activities and look after it.
• Keep files and statistics of daily activities and participate in team meetings to share experiences and discuss special cases with Psychologist, preserving confidentiality
• Inform PMR of any problem of any kind arising during the day-to-day activities.
• Discuss difficulties and problems in counselling with supervisor.
• Ensure regular data collection on MH activities and contribute to monthly reporting and analysis.
• Guarantee that all activities respect MSF principles, do-no-harm and protection standards.
Requirements
• Counselling, social work, psychology or another similar degree/diploma.
• 2-year experience essential. Experience with NGO desirable.
• Strong communication, facilitation and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work in tense, politicised and rapidly changing contexts.
• Fluency in English; proficiency in at least one local language (isiZulu, Sesotho, etc.) and/or migrant languages (French, Portuguese, Shona, Swahili) highly desirable.
• Computer literacy (MS Office).
• Commitment to MSF’s humanitarian principles and experience working with diverse cultural groups.
Both positions report into the Gauteng Immigrants Project structure in Johannesburg and require availability for flexible hours and outreach work across the city
