About this role

This position is open to internal and external candidates. Job Title: LPN / Educational Assistant Bargaining Unit: AFSCME Local 66 Reports To: Building Principal and District Nurse Wage Range: $21.49 – $25.74 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications. TERM: 32.5 hours/week - 182 days As a Health Technician - LPN in the State of Minnesota, you will work directly under the supervision of the Proctor Public Schools District - Licensed School Nurse. This individual will work in the nurse's office overseeing general student health needs at the Elementary level. Pediatric and Triage nursing will be a part of the daily routine. The nurse will be responsible for inputting health data in the online Infinite Campus program in order to maintain accurate and up-to-date health file records. Various educational programs will be taught to students throughout the school year. The Health Technician will assist the Licensed school nurse with hearing and vision screening and follow-ups and referrals. Main Qualifications and Certificates:

• Requires a minimum of two years (LPN) and/or three years (CNA) and is licensed in the State of Minnesota.

• Certified in CPR and First Aid.

• Knowledgeable in diabetes, allergies, asthma, and seizure management.

Other Requirements:

• In good physical health; able to lift 50 -100 pounds seven to eight times/day from floor to waist height.

• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to reach with hands and arms and, simultaneously, talk and hear using a mobile communication device. (ie., cell phone, walkie-talkie)

• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand and stoop, kneel, walk, bend, and squat.

• Assist Diabetic students with blood sugar monitoring and carbohydrate counting under supervision of LSN, student's doctor, and the parents/guardians.

• Enjoys working with children and has experience with special needs children, including children with Autism.

• High energy level, enthusiastic, high standard of work ethic.

• Ability to develop effective working relationships with students and staff.

• Ability to independently supervise students.

• Strong independent thinking, time management, and priority setting skills.

• Computer Proficiency

• Assist school nurse with management of MA health reimbursement.

• Knowledge of principles, practices, and trends in nursing, health care, and child growth and development issues.

• Experience working with health-impaired, developmentally disabled or emotionally involved children.

• Develop, within 10 days, a general understanding of job duties and responsibilities.

• Will demonstrate correct body mechanics during lifting or transferring, considering employee safety, as well as student safety.

• Ability to multitask and switch from one role to another with ease.

• Ability to be an independent thinker with quick decision-making abilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Provide routine first aid and care to ill and injured students.

• Administer medications and treatments as ordered by students' physicians and as directed by the Licensed School Nurse.

• Assist School Nurse with hearing and vision screening at the beginning of the year and as needed throughout the school year.

• Observes and communicates student health issues with licensed school nurse, school counselor, parents, teachers, & principal as needed.

• Performs clerical and computer duties as assigned; to include monitoring student health files for immunization compliance. (as guided by MN state immunization laws)

• Maintains and prepares student health records including health histories, immunization dates, and prescription orders from physicians.

• Assists teachers as directed by the licensed school nurse and/or building principal.

• Notify and consult with other professionals in the school regarding any concerns with a child's physical/emotional health status.

• Other health and educational duties as assigned and delegated by the licensed school nurse or as assigned by the building principal.

• May need to perform special nursing procedures under the delegation/direction of the licensed school nurse.

• Perform duties in accordance with data privacy laws.

Work Environment: Elementary Nurse's Office with children ages K-5th grade. LPN/PARAPROFESSIONAL TASKS Medication: store, pass, check for expiration dates Document student health office visits in PowerSchool Communicate with kitchen staff for the daily menu MA Billing Backpack Program - keep inventory of kits on hand and predicted need. Have signed forms filed with parent/guardian signatures and a signed form of agreement between building principal and 2nd Harvest Food Bank. Dan Willson is the coordinator. Communicate with the student council regarding families that could use extra help with gifts over the holiday season. Keep Inventory of nursing supplies. Notify the RN when low Check AED monthly for defects or expirations of pads or battery. Notify necessary staff of any dietary restrictions/changes for any student. Notify necessary staff of any physical restrictions/changes for any student. Prepare and send necessary medications on all field trips. Give to the classroom teachers. Prepare and send first aid supplies for all field trips. Give them to the classroom teacher. Gloves, Band-Aids, wet wipes. Notify parents/guardians of any injuries to the head or face of all students. Notify parents/guardians when student medication is low or is near expiration date. Notify when 5 days of medication or supplies remain. Let the Secretary know if sending a student home and why. Put updated immunizations into system; send waivers to families that choose not to vaccinate. Do hearing screens and vision screens and health reviews on students when requested. Enter data from screenings into student information system. Attend IEP meetings for Physically Impaired students. Understand normal and abnormal development of Pre-K-5th grade. Understanding of mental health disorders Understanding of chronic conditions CPI training BLS for healthcare providers (CPR) Assist students with diabetes in carb counts, treating lows and highs, setting temporary basal rates. Communicate with the RN and family members of diabetic students. Documentation of blood sugars, carbs, and units of insulin given along with date and time. Have up-to-date care plans on all students with chronic health conditions. The orders must be faxed to the school and signed off on by a doctor.
