SOUTH KINGSTOWN SCHOOL DEPARTMENT Job Description Job Title: Special Education Teacher Assistant/Job Coach Reports to: Director - Special Education Position Summary: This is paraprofessional work of instructional and personal care nature in a classroom setting with individuals or small groups of students who have pronounced physical and/or emotional handicaps or are learning disabled. An employee in this class is responsible for assisting a teacher in carrying out a daily education program. Work involves the development of an effective personal relationship with children having special needs, which requires an unusual amount of patience, empathy and flexibility on the part of the aide. Work requires assisting a teacher in various instructional duties and performing clerical duties according to established procedures which can be learned on the job. An employee is provided with specific instructions and is under the direct supervision of a classroom teacher or program director. Essential Duties: •Reviews and assists students with subject matter individually and/or in small groups. • Assist students in arts and crafts. • Assists student in exercise program. • Attend to personal needs of children (dressing, washing, feeding, changing diapers, etc.) •Assist in physical and speech therapy according to specific instructions given by a therapist. •Prepare snacks. •Assists teachers in giving and scoring tests. •Maintains program records and reports, including attendance •Reproduces learning materials (worksheets, ditto masters, workbooks, learning kits, etc.) for use in the classroom. •Sets up and operates audio-visual equipment. •Maintains and decorates bulletin boards. •Provide tutorial and instructional assistance and implement modifications per IEP as needed. •Provide one to one escort for students. •Cleans and straightens classroom. •Maintains safety of students in classroom (physical outbursts). •Perform other related work as required. •Coordinates classroom assignments for students absent or suspended. •Provides classroom information (assignments, progress reports and such for students with IEP’s) to parent/guardian on a weekly basis. Job Coaching: •Assist and supervise student(s) with community-based instruction individually and/or in small groups. •Apply confidentiality rules and procedures in communicating with teachers, school personnel, and other members of the community related to instruction in school and community learning environment. •Collaborate with the student’s team to identify career opportunities and potential employers so the job coordinator can make appropriate placements. •Collect data sheets and complete observation paperwork involving career and vocational training. •Assist teachers in giving and scoring career and vocational assessments. •Communicate effectively in and among work sites, the school environment, and community learning environments. •Attend all requested training and workshops. Minimum Qualifications: •Some knowledge of modern educational practices and procedures. •Ability to work with handicapped children in a sensitive and effective manner. •Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. •Ability to learn assigned duties readily and to adhere to prescribed classroom procedures. •Ability to restrain outbursts. •Ability to maintain accurate records. •Ability to operate office equipment. •Graduation from an approved high school or GED. •Training required by the school district.
