About this role
MAINTENANCE MECHANIC HELPER DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves the performance of semi-skilled tasks when assisting Maintenance Mechanics in the maintenance and repair of buildings, equipment or facilities in a suburban school district. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Maintenance Mechanic or the maintenance supervisor. Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: May be required to perform a variety of semi-skilled or unskilled work, such as: carpentry, electrical, heating, masonry repairs, painting, plumbing, roofing work, heating, ventilating, air conditioning repairs and ground maintenance. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARATERISTICS: Working knowledge of rough carpentry, mechanical repair work, painting or other construction or maintenance trades; efficiency in the use of hand tools and machine tools; ability to perform semi-skilled manual tasks without constant supervision; ability to learn trade skills and methods; ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions; integrity; physical strength and endurance; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: (a) Graduation from high school or vocational school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and one (1) year of experience as a helper in any of the skilled building or service trades; OR
• Five (5) years of satisfactory experience as a helper in any of the skilled building or service trades; OR
• An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (a) and (b).
Special Requirement: Possession of a valid Class 5 New York State driver's license at the time of appointment. NOTE: Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full-time experience requirements.
