About this role

Job summary

Join our dedicated emergency CQC registered response team as an Ambulance Care Assistant/Driver, where you'll play a vital role in delivering compassionate patient care and ensuring safe transportation to healthcare facilities. This dynamic position combines the responsibilities of providing essential support to paramedics, first responders and patients with the crucial task of driving ambulance vehicles efficiently and safely. Your energetic approach and commitment to safety will help us deliver timely, professional medical assistance in diverse situations, making a real difference in people's lives every day.

We are looking for people to join our bank and are ideally able to commit to one shift per week (min 4 hours). You must be able to start work from the Ambulance Station at Malton, and be prepared to travel anywhere in the UK.

Main duties of the job

Duties

Safely operate ambulance vehicles, adhering to all traffic laws and safety protocols, while maintaining a high standard of driving professionalism. Assist paramedics with patient handling, including lifting, transferring, and securing patients on stretchers or wheelchairs. Provide compassionate support to patients during transit, ensuring their comfort and dignity are maintained at all times. Conduct routine vehicle maintenance checks, including fluid levels, tire pressure, and safety equipment, reporting any issues promptly. Communicate clearly and effectively with team members, emergency services, and patients to coordinate smooth operations. Support the loading and unloading of medical equipment and supplies necessary for patient care. Maintain accurate records of journeys, patient details, and vehicle inspections in compliance with organisational policies.

Job description Job responsibilities

Transport walking patients

Transport patients requiring the use of a wheelchair

Transport patients requiring assistance with moving and handling,including the use of the carry chair and other manual handling aids

Transport patients requiring the use of a stretcher

Administer First Aid where necessary

Complete vehicle and journey documentation

Drive ambulance vehicles demonstrating; Consideration for the road condition, comfort and safety of the patient, vehicle sympathy,consideration to other road users and the highway code

Identify any potential problems or concerns within the patients home environment (especially vulnerable adults and children); report them tothe appropriate Team Leader, Medical Staff and follow the correctYorMed reporting procedure

Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with YorMeds policy

Undertake any required training in order to ensure quality care and best patient experience

Participate in the YorMed infection control procedure routine for cleaning

Work in accordance with the requirements of the Health & Safety atWork Act and Manual Handling regulations 1992 as outlined in YorMed policies and procedures.

Ensure that the ambulance vehicle and its equipment are in operational readiness and report any defects.

Perform a daily vehicle inspection and equipment check at the start ofeach shift

Be responsible for a basic level of vehicle maintenance and for allequipment on each vehicle

Maintain the highest professional standards in the representation ofYorMed, the delivery of patient care, patient safety and patientexperience

Attend to any first aid emergency or Major Incident which the postholder may come across during routine journeys.

Transport and care for all patients in the post holder's care i.e. transportwalking patients, wheel chair patients and those requiring a carry chairor the use of manual handling aids

Re-schedule any planned work to accommodate additional patients thepost holder may be required to transport.

The post holder may be required to carry out a job of equal or less valuethan this post with relevant training to maintain service deliverance

Person Specification

Qualifications Essential

Full manual UK driving licence with no more than 3 points for speeding (any offence relating to drink or drugs on the licence will be rejected). GCSE's at grade C (4) or Functional Key Skills level 2 or demonstrable experience

Desirable

C1 driving classification on drivers license Healthcare Assistant, Care or First Aid Assistant qualification.

Experience Essential

Previous customer service experience Good understanding of the Highway Code Awareness of equality and diversity in the working environment and surrounding community

Desirable

Previous patient care experience Previous shift working experience Previous NHS experience Good understanding of human anatomy and physiology Demonstrable experience as an ACA
