Main duties of the job
As a Research Nurse, you will recruit and support participants, conduct home visits across London to collect biological samples and study data, and ensure participants are followed up in line with study protocols. You will maintain accurate research documentation, coordinate with collaborating sites and laboratories, contribute to study logistics, and work closely with a multidisciplinary research team to deliver high-quality clinical research.

Job description Job responsibilities
Clinical Research:
Work with the Principal Investigator (PI), Senior Research Nurse, Pandemic Preparedness Research Theme leadership team, research technicians and collaborating sites to coordinate and deliver HOPPER and other research studies in accordance with study protocols and Good Clinical Practice (GCP). Prepare, assemble and quality-check self-sampling kits and clinical packs for use in research studies. Coordinate participant recruitment, enrolment and follow-up across recruiting sites, including reviewing eConsent, monitoring participant progress, and ensuring protocol adherence throughout the study. Conduct research visits, including home visits where required, obtaining informed consent where delegated, collecting biological samples (including blood and other relevant specimens), and ensuring their safe transport and processing in accordance with study protocols and applicable regulations. Support the maintenance of regulatory and ethical approvals, including liaising with the Health Research Authority (HRA), Research Ethics Committees (RECs), and processing protocol amendments and other study documentation. Review medical records and collect, record and maintain accurate clinical, microbiological and epidemiological research data in electronic databases and study systems, ensuring compliance with GDPR, GCP and local governance requirements. Maintain essential study documentation and coordinate regulatory submissions, including preparation and submission of protocol amendments and other documentation to the Health Research Authority (HRA), Research Ethics Committees (REC) and other relevant regulatory bodies. Monitor study progress and participant recruitment, maintaining accurate study records and providing regular updates to the Senior Research Nurse/Study Coordinator and research leadership team. Support quality assurance activities by identifying potential issues with study conduct, participating in audits and monitoring visits, and ensuring compliance with the Research Governance Framework, GCP and all relevant regulatory requirements. Manage study resources effectively, including maintaining adequate stocks of study equipment and consumables. Develop and maintain effective working relationships with collaborators, research teams and clinical staff, promoting awareness of translational research and supporting delivery of research across the HPRU and collaborating organisations. Contribute to the analysis, dissemination and communication of research findings, including preparing reports, presentations and scientific publications where appropriate. Participate actively in laboratory meetings, seminars, training and continuing professional development, maintaining an up-to-date knowledge of respiratory infections and pandemic preparedness research. Contribute to HPRU public and patient involvement and engagement (PPIE) activities and support wider research engagement initiatives.
Patient/Participant Care:
Undertake participant sampling procedures, ensuring participant safety, comfort and protocol compliance. To demonstrate politeness, courtesy, and sensitivity in dealing with participants/patients/relatives and colleagues, maintaining good relations. This will include the provision of information and support to relatives/carers as appropriate To demonstrate awareness and compliance with Imperial College London and other participating organisational policies, procedures, guidelines, and standards always. This will include identification of risk (clinical, health, safety, and security) To ensure appropriate training is gained to ensure the safety of patients/participants before, during and after a procedure is carried out (i.e. taking blood samples). To treat all patients with dignity and respect throughout the procedure and to identify any Adverse Events/ Serious Adverse Events ASAP to the medical team/PI/CI/Study Co-ordinator To act as patient advocate in line with the Research Governance Framework and GCP guidelines Maintain and update own clinical expertise and contribute as a role model to ensure the delivery of nursing care is at the highest possible level to meet participant needs Develop tools to improve the quality of the service Ensure that study documentation is maintained to the highest standard, including electronic records, and conforms to the Research Governance Framework, GCP guidelines and General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) Supporting the study team in the preparation and submission of research ethics and regulatory applications To promptly report Adverse Events to the Senior Research Nurse/Study Co-ordinator according to study protocols Undertake relevant training for electronic information systems required to ensure study flow.

To participate in and contribute to the academic programme of seminars and staff meetings in the locality To maintain up-to-date skills and knowledge Act as a resource for colleagues in relation to all aspects of clinical research To maintain an up-to-date knowledge of Respiratory Infection research-related articles To undertake relevant research-related training, such as GCP training and maintain an up-to-date knowledge of research governance regulations To comply with all relevant research regulations, e.g., the Human Tissue Act, Data Protection Act, UK Policy Framework for Health and Social Care Research and Good Clinical Practice requirements Continue your own professional development, keeping up to date with current practice Maintain links with other research nurses and clinical nurse specialists within Imperial College London and the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) to share knowledge and provide mutual support Develop personal and professional knowledge through study, critical self-appraisal, clinical supervision and networking with other health professionals locally and nationally.
Leadership/Managerial:
Participate in the management of the study team, including delegation of work on a day-to-day basis for junior and/or non-permanent staff Be the named nurse responsible and undertake an independent leading role for their team on the day, ensuring that relevant protocols are adhered to and that participants are recruited in a timely fashion To anticipate the daily needs arising within their teams and act accordingly To actively participate in organising the teams and logistics daily Actively participate in the development of the study and local protocols

Clinical Responsibilities:
The post holder will be expected to take additional responsibilities appropriate to their level of experience and expertise If necessary, the post holder will hold an honorary clinical contract with the appropriate NHS Trust/s and the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).
Person Specification
Qualifications Essential
Registered Nurse (minimum 1 year post experience in a relevant area).
Desirable
Certified in in paediatric venepuncture.
Experience Essential
Experience of working directly with patients / study participants in a clinical setting. Research experience involving the collection of samples from children. Experience of recruiting and retaining participants in research. Proven experience of in accurate data entry, data verification and database management.
Desirable
Experience of assembling and quality-checking clinical packs for participant self-sample collection. Experience in respiratory medicine or infection. Experience of carrying out community or home visits. Experience in using electronic data capture systems such as REDCap. Experience in processing and shipping biological samples. Experience of preparing and submitting research ethics and regulatory applications.
