Job Summary
The Principal Controls Engineer performs broad system maintenance and support to resolve unique matters. Leads large scale projects using internal and external resources. Leads development and implementation of policies and procedures. Effectively interacts with other internal and external teams, including the design engineering, site engineering, regional operations teams, onsite support vendors and consultants on projects, policies and procedures to resolve unique controls engineering matters. Mentors engineers within the Engineering and Site Operations job family groups (e.g. Data Center Engineering).
Responsibilities
System Operation and Work Practices
Expert operating knowledge of control systems to include highly advanced diagnostics and repairsAbility to apply knowledge of Equinix process and procedure and industry standards to resolve unique controls engineering issuesCapable of developing complete sequences of operation and control schemes for HVAC, electrical and fuel systems. Develops SOOs and control schemes which are widely applicable and reusableWorks with vendors to identify and resolve hardware and software issues with vendors products which affect Equinix operationUtilizes safe working practices at an expert level (e.g. can apply procedure for lockout/tagout, can explain MSDS, etc.)Evaluates and assures the safe working practices of othersReviews and recommends work practice guidelines and policyInteracts with other engineering disciplines Problem Solving
Consistently solves highly complex, cross-functional issues requiring independent action and a high degree of initiative to resolveImplements and makes recommendations for unique system level enhancements to eliminate potential problemsTests suitability of components for deployment across multiple sites or projectsCan troubleshoot electrical and mechanical problems not associated with controls Internal/External Contact
Mentors junior team membersDirects internal and external project team membersDirects teams per project or initiative such as General Contractors, design teams, commissioning agents, equipment suppliers, etc.Significantly contributes to establishing and maintaining high value relationshipsProvide executive level communication including business requirements documents and advanced technical writingCommunicates Equinix operations decisions to customers and conducts post incident communications with customersExecutive level communications in standardized templates and contributes to developing and delivering original executive level communications Technical Expertise
Has broad expert knowledge understanding of electrical, fire protection, and HVAC systems design and operation including advanced optimization strategies, deficiencies and the impact of system design choices on controls requirements and costsHas expert controls system knowledge sufficient to rapidly comprehend new systemsTests suitability of components or action plans for deploymentsIs a subject matter expert to others in and outside of the groupExtensive knowledge of multiple facets of controls engineeringDevelops and executes projectsReviews budget and scope, calculates savings pertaining to control system replacement projectsResponsible for budget for project's and/or metro area controls repair and maintenanceCalculates savingsLeads internal and/or external engineering seminars/conferencesAdvanced understanding of server operating systems, networks, and cyber security Training
Acquires knowledge by expanding experience with systems, vendor training, participation in industry groups or meetings and shadowing othersDevelops and delivers multidiscipline trainingIs a subject matter expert (SME) with many systems and trains others inside and outside of the group Develop Policy/Methods
Develops policy and procedure documentsDevelops, maintains and improves libraries of standardize programming modules, sequences of operations, graphics and reporting tools Assess Adherence to Policy
Assures adherence to developed standards and policy through review of documentation, participation in commissioning activities and Data Center physicalsDevelops high level reporting / summaries of policy compliance information Qualifications
