Technical Specialist II
Job Description: The Engineering, Science and Analysis (ESA) Strategic Capabilities Unit comprises the technical talent and organizational leadership that enables the successful delivery of high-impact discriminating technologies for our customers’ missions. What You’ll Do: • Assist with daily operation and maintenance of Cryogenic Labs, Laboratory Hardware and Laboratory Test Facilities across multiple campuses. • Make measurements in the lab and report data. Produce high-quality data packages and reports. • Work with senior laboratory and program personnel to develop and implement custom cryogenic measurement setups. • Operate the following hardware and instrumentation: • • Vacuum pumping stations and associated equipment (Cryo Pumps, Turbomolecular, Getter, Diffusion, Ion and Roughing). • Leak detection / mass spectrometer equipment. • Electronic test equipment. • Cryo-vacuum fluid handling equipment and thermal hardware. • Mechanical support equipment.
• Assist in set-up and operation of critical cryogenic test facilities for assessing thermo-mechanical performance of components, sub-assemblies and assemblies. • Maintain and repair Cryogenics lab equipment and keep associated lab space in a 6S condition. • Maintain calibration status of all Cryo lab equipment. • Assist with scheduling and support lab measurements in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. • Assist with coordination of lab improvements (e.g., equipment, documentation, facilities). • Keep current with complementary lab services (e.g., Detector Center, Optics Group, Materials and Processes Group) at BAE Systems Inc., Space and Mission Systems (SMS). • Perform direct program work and indirect laboratory work as needed for lab/program operations. • Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule. • Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, the Strategic Business Units, Strategic Capabilities Units and the Company. Interact appropriately with others in order to maintain a positive and productive work environment. • Perform other duties as necessary. On-Site Work Environment: This position requires regular in-person engagement by working on-site five days each normally scheduled week in the primary work location. Travel and local commute between company campuses and other possible non-company locations may be required.
Working Conditions: • Work is performed in an office environment, laboratory, cleanroom, or production floor.
Required Skills and Education: • High School diploma or equivalent plus 4 years or more related experience. • Each higher-level related degree, i.e., Bachelor’s or Master’s, may substitute for two years of related experience. Degree must be from a university, college, or school which is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education. • A current, active Top Secret/SCI security clearance is required. • Demonstrated aptitude and capability in applied vacuum technology, ESD protocols, thermal systems, mass spectrometer leak detection, cryogenic systems and operations in an aerospace environment including handling flight hardware. • Demonstrated capability of hands-on electronics experience; must have the ability to set up and troubleshoot tests and set-ups. • Demonstrated hands-on capability for a wide variety of mechanical hardware including (but not limited to) vacuum system troubleshooting / integration, flanges, fittings, connections, mounts, etc. • A complete knowledge of and understanding of property /equipment / user / calibration systems and standards with demonstrated capability and applicable experience. • Ability to write and release test procedures, SER’s and related technical documentation. • Proven compliance to, and experience with 6S housekeeping standards. • Excellent organizational (scheduling, lab operations / organization) skills. • Excellent communication skills with emphasis on being a key group contributor for high level technical meetings involving planning and execution of cryogenic testing for lab and flight programs. • Demonstrated ability to work with many different customers / stakeholders with a emphasis on customer service and interpersonal skills. • Ability to operate Oscilloscopes, Power supplies, Multi-Meters, and Data acquisition monitoring devices. • Demonstrated ability to interpret electrical & mechanical drawings, specifications, and notes. • Capable of operating forklifts for transport of equipment and cryogens. • Detailed knowledge of vacuum system design and flight hardware contamination controls. • Detailed knowledge and experience with liquid cryogen handling to include Liquid Nitrogen and Liquid Helium. • Experience working with and repairing heavy machinery, pumps, and other mechanical systems relevant to laboratory operations. • Experience working with and handling precision optomechanical assemblies. • Experience in cryogenic testing component, sub-assembly and instrument level hardware spanning all product classes. • Knowledge of vacuum chamber and TVAC control systems. • Presently have or have an ability to be trained to obtain specialized certifications for normal laboratory operations (Clean room, Crane, Cryogenics, ESD, ESD Work Area Monitor, FOD, Forklift, Highly ESD, IPC J-Std 001E, IPC/WHMA-A620, J-Std-001, Mate/De-mate, Polymerics, Pressure, Test Conductor) • Must be a self-starter, ambitious, and a conscientious individual with a very high attention to detail. • Able to lift 50 pounds and work with heavy equipment, tooling and fixtures. • Full understanding of BAE Systems Inc., Space and Mission Systems (SMS) hardware classifications. • Proven critical thinking skills. • Must be versatile and contribute to high-energy team environments. • Proven ability to multi-task in a technical /engineering support role with senior personnel guidance and supervision. #LI-GJ1
Preferred Skills and Education: • High School diploma with 10 or more years of hands-on technician experience, or a 2-year technical degree with 8 or more years of directly relevant experience. • Precision Mechanical Assembly skills for cryogenic flight hardware and instruments • Extensive critical lift experience with flight hardware • Experience in multi-build of cryogenic components or assemblies • Cryogenic MGSE experience • Experience with GD&T and machine tooling in support of flight and non-flight hardware manufacture and assembly • Ability to work in a safe modality when using cryogenic temperature fluids.
