About this role

Job summary

The Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) Practitioner will provide specialist assessment, formulation, intervention and consultation for people with learning disabilities and/or autism whose quality of life is impacted by behaviours of concern.

They will promote evidence-based Positive Behaviour Support approaches, contribute to the development of the PBS pathway, and support service users, families, carers and professionals to achieve improved outcomes through person-centred practice.

Main Duties of the Role

Complete specialist functional assessments and formulations for people with learning disabilities and autism who present with behaviours of concern. Develop, implement and review Positive Behaviour Support plans in partnership with individuals, families, carers and professionals. Provide specialist PBS advice, guidance and consultation to colleagues, support providers and partner agencies. Manage a defined caseload and contribute to holistic assessment, intervention and care planning within the MDT. Deliver PBS-related training, coaching and support to staff, carers and other stakeholders. Promote trauma-informed, evidence-based and person-centred approaches in all aspects of practice. Contribute to service development, clinical governance, quality improvement and audit activities. Maintain accurate clinical records and ensure compliance with safeguarding, confidentiality and professional standards.

Person Specification

Qualifications Essential

Batchelors (Hons) Degree in Psychology / Nursing / Behaviour Therapist or another associated relevant field. Specialist training in Positive Behaviour Support (eg. Pg Dip; Level 5 Diploma in PBS or equivalent.) to be completed within first 2 years of employment

Knowledge Essential

Post qualification experience in working with people with a learning disability, mental health, and behaviour that challenges. Mental Capacity Act Experience of working with carers Experience of communicating and presenting to a wide range of agencies and forums. Experience of use of skills to enable communication with people who have limited or different communication abilities. Problem solving skills Report writing skills Excellent working knowledge of evidence-based practice and current government guidance in learning disabilities A team player, but also experience in autonomous working. A theoretical understanding of, and experience in, PBS, Functional Assessment and related behaviour management models and strategies. ability to making decision regarding client risk and care in complex cases Effective skills and experience of multi-disciplinary/agency working Able to engage with vulnerable people and work effectively in highly distressing and challenging circumstances. Understanding diversity and implementation into practice Ability to seek and engage in support and clinical supervision.

Desirable

Knowledge of STOMP Knowledge of Trauma Informed Support Training of groups of staff, in-house and external in PBS Experience of working within an MDT community team Experience of staff coaching/supervision

Skills Essential

Ability to work independently and to prioritise workload and manage related demands. Self-awareness and emotional resilience in face of distressing situations Ability to cope with potentially threatening and violent situations and to use breakaway techniques.

Additional Requirements Essential

Able to travel within the local community for appointments. Willingness to work flexibly

Access to transport and the ability to travel within the required geographical area
