About this role
About mpathic

Building on our work in areas like RL gyms, red teaming, and benchmarking, we are creating the foundation for training, probing, and measuring advanced AI systems reliably, auditably, and at scale.
About the Role
mpathic is looking for a detail-oriented Staff Accountant to own our day-to-day accounting operations and month-end close. This is a hands-on, ongoing role supporting a growing company — you'll work closely with the VP of Finance to keep our books clean, current, and audit-ready, including during an active fundraising process.
What You'll Do
• Accounts Payable: Process vendor invoices in Bill.com; code transactions to the correct budget/GL accounts, ensuring accuracy and proper timing; maintain 1099 vendor tracking and management (W-9 collection, 1099 classification, year-end filing support)
• Credit Card Management: Track receipts, code transactions, and reconcile monthly credit card statements
• Bank Reconciliation: Perform monthly bank reconciliations across all company accounts, identifying and resolving discrepancies promptly
• Month-End Close: Close out assets and liabilities each month; prepare balance sheet reconciliations
• Collaboration: Work closely with the VP of Finance on month-end close, flagging any anomalies or issues early
• Ad Hoc Projects: Support the VP of Finance on special projects as needed [add specifics — e.g., fundraise data room prep, process improvement, systems migration]
What We're Looking For
• 3–5 years of accounting experience, ideally with a startup or small business, including full-cycle month-end close
• Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance
• CPA Requirement: Active CPA license or currently pursuing CPA licensure with demonstrated progress toward completion
• Strong working knowledge of QuickBooks Online and BILL
• Experience with balance sheet reconciliations and closing asset/liability accounts, not just transactional bookkeeping
• Solid understanding of accrual-basis accounting and GAAP
• High attention to detail and the ability to identify and resolve discrepancies.
• Ability to manage recurring accounting processes and deadlines independently with minimal oversight
• Strong written and verbal communication skills for close collaboration with the VP of Finance
Nice to Have
• Experience working in a venture-backed startup or similarly fast-paced environment.
• Experience preparing books and supporting documentation for fundraising due diligence or external audit.
• Experience improving or documenting accounting processes and internal controls.
Working Arrangement
• Full-time, ongoing role (specifics on hours/schedule to be confirmed)
• Remote, with regular check-ins and close collaboration with the VP of Finance
• Employment structure (W-2 employee vs. 1099 contractor) to be finalized based on candidate preference and company needs
