The Natembea Health Centre ensures high-quality healthcare services for the Ashesi Community through health maintenance, management, prevention of disease, and community empowerment through health education and counseling.

About the Role

The Medical Officer is responsible for providing comprehensive, evidence-based, patient-centred medical care to students, faculty, staff, and other authorized clients of the University Health Center. The role encompasses clinical services, preventive and public health activities, emergency response, health promotion, disease surveillance, coordination of referrals, and collaboration with internal and external healthcare providers to ensure continuity and quality of care.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Care

• Provide and manage direct patient care, including physical examinations, evaluations, assessments, diagnoses and treatment for a specified patient population.

• Prescribe medications and investigations in accordance with national treatment guidelines and institutional policies.

• Perform minor medical procedures within the scope of practice.

• Provide emergency stabilization and initiate life-saving interventions when required.

• Review laboratory and diagnostic imaging results and communicate findings appropriately.

• Participate in after-hours or on-call services as assigned.

Public Health and Preventive Services

• Participate in disease prevention and health promotion programs across the university.

• Provide health education sessions on communicable diseases, non-communicable diseases and sexual and reproductive health.

• Support outbreak preparedness, surveillance, and response.

• Provide student medical screening and pre-employment medical examinations.

• Contribute to university wellness initiatives and preventive health campaigns.

• Participate in epidemiological surveillance and reporting of notifiable diseases.

Referral and Reproductive Health

• Assess patients requiring specialist care and initiate appropriate referrals.

• Liaise with referral facilities regarding patient management and outcomes.

• Offer sexual and reproductive health services and counselling.

• Identify students requiring psychological support and coordinate referrals to counselling and mental health services.

• Participate in student orientation health programs.

• Support management of chronic illnesses and special health needs among students.

• Contribute to disability accommodation assessments where appropriate.

Quality Improvement

• Participate in clinical audits and quality improvement initiatives.

• Ensure compliance with clinical guidelines, infection prevention and control standards, and patient safety protocols.

• Report clinical incidents and contribute to corrective actions.

• Support accreditation and regulatory compliance activities.

Emergency Medical Services

• Provide prompt assessment, stabilization, and management of medical and traumatic emergencies occurring on campus.

• Provide clinical response during medical emergencies, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), advanced life support, and stabilization of critically ill or injured patients.

• Coordinate emergency referrals and transfers to appropriate secondary or tertiary healthcare facilities, ensuring safe patient handover and continuity of care.

• Participate in the development, implementation, and periodic review of the University's Emergency Response Plan and clinical emergency protocols.

• Participate in emergency preparedness drills, disaster management exercises, and mass casualty response planning.

• Maintain accurate documentation of emergency cases, including incident reports and referrals.

• Participate in training university staff and students in first aid, basic life support (BLS), and emergency preparedness where appropriate.

• Serve as a member of the University's Emergency Response Team and provide medical expertise during campus-wide emergencies, disease outbreaks, and public health incidents.

• Support occupational health responses related to workplace injuries, exposure incidents, and other health emergencies involving staff, students, and visitors.

Qualifications

Essential

• Doctor of Medicine (MBChB or equivalent).

• At least 3 years of experience post-housemanship.

• Registration with the Ghana Medical and Dental Council.

• Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS); Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) is an added advantage.

• Experience working in a university, primary care, or community health setting is an added advantage.
