Sessional Doctors - Little Bridge House Children's Hospice

Children's Hospice South West (CHSW) is a registered charity dedicated to the provision of hospice care for life limited children and their families from the South West.

In response to a growing demand for children's palliative care and hospice support we are developing our medical team at Little Bridge House, Fremington, Near Barnstaple, North Devon.

Main duties of the job

We are keen to hear from General Practitioners/ Paediatricians who have an interest in Childrens Palliative Care and who can work independently to cover routine clinical sessions at the hospice and also ad hoc out of hours cover for end-of-life care.

This provides a unique opportunity to work closely with children and families, and in partnership with other practitioners and service providers to offer highly personalised medical care in response to the needs of the child and the wishes of the family.

Training and support will be offered, and this provides a great entry opportunity into the field of children's palliative care.

Job description Job responsibilities

To provide medical care to children and families referred to Childrens Hospice South West.

To assist in assessment of new referrals.

To actively strive to maintain good and ongoing communication with all other professionals involved in each familys care, including accurate and prompt end of stay letters to GPs and Consultant Paediatricians.

To be a resource of information to families, co-workers and agencies beyond the hospice where possible, (where possible).

In conjunction with the Medical Director and fellow Childrens Hospice Doctors, to be available to respond to telephone enquiries from the families using the hospice during working hours.

To promote the hospice in all ways, including talks and lectures both within and beyond the hospice.

To work collaboratively with other members of the Care team.

To have a working knowledge of the educational and supportive literature available at the hospice.

To make an accurate record of medical assessments and interventions in the childs notes and to ensure that resuscitation plans/End of Life plans are updated as appropriate.

To take responsibility for liaising with other doctors to ensure continuity of care for the children.

To have a working knowledge of the regulatory requirements of the childrens hospice including the statutory notifications required.

To check and sign medicine charts within 24 hours of childs arrival at the hospice.

To provide continuity of care for the dying child and their family.

When involved in the care of a child who has died to ensure the appropriate certification and notification is undertaken.

Person Specification

Experience Essential

The role requires sensitivity and dedication. There must be a willingness and eagerness to learn and promote the development of childrens palliative care. The ability to work within a team and in partnership with parents is essential. Responsible to the family as a whole, striving to improve quality of life and having patience and understanding
