Job Summary/Definition Under direction of a school principal, reinforce instruction in an assigned learning environment; perform clerical duties in support of classroom activities. Examples of Duties/Responsibilities 1. Reinforce the teacher's lessons by reviewing and repeating educational material, reading or telling stories. 2. Observe and oversee children in a variety of instructional settings. 3. Referee games and discipline students for minor misbehavior in accordance with district and school policies and procedures. 4. Resolve playground disputes, and/or send messenger to advise school office personnel in event of serious dispute or injury. 5. Distribute lunch to students if assigned. 6. Prepare instructional materials by measuring, cuffing, coloring, assembling, pasting, laminating, etc. 7. Keep records reflecting attendance and grades. 8. Assist in keeping learning spaces neat, clean, and safe. 9. Verbally support students with activities of daily living related to grooming, toileting, dressing, and eating. 10. Accompany students on field trips. 11. Proctor written tests; score tests and convert raw scores according to charts; post results to student records. 12. Provide information to teacher regarding student progress or problems. 13. Listen to students read. 14. Lead discussions with students as assigned. 15. Play games with students and demonstrate arts and crafts projects. 16. Assist students in using audio visual and other equipment including computers. 17. Perform related duties as assigned. Qualifications Guide Knowledge and Abilities Knowledge of: 1. Basic principles of child guidance and child development. 2. Basic subjects including arithmetic, grammar, spelling and reading. 3. Oral and written communications skills. 4. Recordkeeping techniques. 5. Effective interpersonal skills. Ability to: 1. Maintain confidentiality of student information. 2. Perform routine clerical tasks and use instructional support equipment. 3. Learn basic tutoring techniques and methods. 4. Reinforce instruction in an assigned learning environment. 5. Understand and carry out oral and written instructions. 6. Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Training/Education and Experience Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school and some experience in working with children in an organized setting. Licenses and Certificates: District Paraprofessional Proficiency Exam certification mandated by the State of California for Paraprofessionals. Certification may be granted in one of the following three ways: 1. Possession of an Associate's Degree (AA); or 2. Completion of 48 college semester units (official transcripts required); or 3. Completion and passage of the district-approved proficiency test. Working Conditions/Physical Requirements: 1. Instructional learning environment; subject to bending, stooping, standing for extended periods, walking and occasional lifting. 2. Exposure to communicable diseases, contact with human blood, other body fluids and hazardous materials.
