LOUISVILLE CITY SCHOOLS JOB DESCRIPTION

Position: Health Aide Reports to: Building Principal/District Nurse (RN) Description: To provide health services as needed and assigned under the direction of the licensed school nurse and the supervision of the building administrator. To promote health and safety for students and staff and to provide health interventions as instructed and directed by the licensed school nurse. NOTE: The below lists are not ranked in order of importance

Essential Functions:

• Ensure safety of students

• Assist with toileting needs

• Report suspected child abuse or serious illness/injuries according to established procedures

• Assist with communicable disease control including screening for head lice and enforcing immunization requirements

• Interact in a positive manner with staff, students, parents and community

• Assist with school-wide health, dental, and vision screenings including scheduling, record keeping, and obtaining needed materials and supplies.

• Follow up on health care referrals and assist families in accessing needed services

• Assist with development and maintenance of confidential student rosters of significant health conditions, student immunization exemptions, individualized student health plans, and student receiving medication

• Maintain inventory of supplies

• Complete monthly checks of AED equipment as needed

• Maintain and monitor supplies for diabetes kits and first aid kits

• Administer specialized physical health care services such as catheterization, tube feeding, diabetes management, inhalation therapy, colostomy care, etc. as training and skill permit

• Maintain and submit information pertaining to Medicaid School Program

• Adhere to requirements for confidentiality regarding students' records; discreetly handle sensitive information pertaining to staff, parents, and students

• Support and promote the value of wellness and health to students and staff

• Perform clerical duties such as filing, copying, typing, and maintaining simple records

• Operate a computer to input, retrieve, and file data and text

• Attend in-service or training programs as required by Board Policy, the Superintendent

• Assist with training of staff for usage of epipens, inhalers, abdominal thrust, etc.

• Contact student homes

• Knowledge of computer skills, emails, and spreadsheets

• Perform any additional duties that may be assigned by the Superintendent

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

• Perform other duties as assigned by the Nurse/Building Principal

• Serve as a role model for students in how to conduct themselves as responsible citizens

Qualifications:

• Valid LPN License issued by the Ohio Board of Nursing

• Experience working with children

• CPR and First Aid Training

• Hold or be able to obtain an Ohio Educational Aide Permit issued by the Ohio Department of Education or hold similar license/s through nursing qualifications

• Excellent attendance and strong work ethics

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Ability to “multi-task” and complete work in a timely manner in the midst of interruptions

• Basic knowledge of prescription and nonprescription medication

• Works effectively with others

• Communicates clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing

• Demonstrates active and effective listening skills

• Develops and maintains a safe and effective working environment

• Maintains basic understanding or knowledge regarding local, state, and federal health and safety regulations

• Organizational and problem solving

Equipment Operated:

• First Aid equipment

• AED

• Diagnostic, screening and assessment equipment

Additional Working Conditions:

• Occasional interaction among unruly children

• Frequent exposure to blood, bodily fluids and tissue

• Occasional requirement of a “2 person” lift and carry children up to approximately 80 pounds

• May be required to work past scheduled hours on any given day due to emergencies and illnesses

• Occasional requirement to lift and carry (i.e. children) up to approximately 50 pounds

• Frequent requirement to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, see, read, speak, reach, stretch with hands and arms, and stoop

• Complies with all Louisville Board of Education policies and procedures
