ROCKWOOD SCHOOL DISTRICT JOB DESCRIPTION POSITION TITLE: Mechanic – Transportation
STATUS: Full Time/40 hours per week/ 12 months
FLSA STATUS: Exempt X Non-Exempt
REPORTS TO: Director of Transportation
HUMAN RESOURCES: Approved Not Approved
POSITION SUMMARY: Performs all required maintenance to keep school buses and other vehicles in excellent mechanical condition. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Perform preventive maintenance on school buses and other vehicles according to a pre-determined schedule.
• Perform repairs on school buses and other vehicles on an “as needed” basis.
• Inspect buses prior to the start of school, and affix State of Missouri inspection sticker as prescribed by law.
• Assist in preparation of school bus fleet for the annual State High Patrol inspection.
• Install special adaptive equipment in buses on an “as needed” basis.
• Deliver spare buses to breakdown location; attempt to bring disabled bus back to shop.
• Complete appropriate service forms/ paperwork in a timely manner.
• Assist with snow and ice removal from buses and parking lot.
• Assist with cleaning of garage at least weekly
• Performs other duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
• Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in written form, with employees of all levels, as well as parents, students and community members.
• Ability to wear required personal protective equipment.
• Ability to safely use all tools associated with the repair of the vehicles within the Transportation Department and the School District
• Ability to safely and legally operate a motor vehicle.
• Respect for student, teachers, parents, and support staff.
• Ability to move throughout building and in the surrounding facility outside the office (i.e. bus parking lot).
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Must be 21 years of age and have had a driver's license for 3 years.
• Must have CDL and bus operator's permit or ability to obtain this license.
• Minimum of 2 to 5 years' experience as a vehicle mechanic, with a thorough knowledge of both diesel and gasoline powered equipment.
• Experience in school bus maintenance preferred.
• Must be licensed by the State of Missouri as an Inspector-Mechanic or have the ability to obtain this license.
• Must have their own basic shop tools, including metric and standard sockets up to ½” drive.
EQUIPMENT USED: Hand tools, power tools, fueling equipment. WORK ENVIRONMENT:
• Ability to work in a variety of locations, travel throughout the District, work non-traditional hours which may include evenings and weekends and meet the physical demands of handling a variety of needs. While performing duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk, hear, walk, stand, reach, bend, stoop, crouch, squat and kneel .
• Working conditions can include inclement weather, including extreme hot and cold temperatures.
