Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Paediatric Clinical Leader to work as part of our team at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals.

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Band 6 Paediatric Nurse to join our dynamic and supportive paediatric team.

This is an exciting opportunity for a skilled clinician with strong leadership capability to take on a key role in delivering high-quality, safe, and effective care to children and young people within an acute paediatric setting. The successful applicant will demonstrate clinical expertise, a proactive approach to patient safety, and a commitment to continuous service improvement.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will support the delivery of safe, effective, and compassionate care, acting as a clinical leader and role model within the team.

Key responsibilities include:

Acting as nurse in charge, coordinating shifts and ensuring safe staffing and patient flow Delivering high standards of direct patient care, including care of acutely unwell children Providing clinical leadership, supervision, and support to nursing staff and students Managing and escalating clinical incidents and safeguarding concerns appropriately Working collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team (MDT) to deliver holistic care Participating in audit, governance, and quality improvement initiatives Supporting staff development, including mentorship, supervision, and appraisal processes Ensuring effective communication with patients, families, and colleagues

The Band 6 Sister will work with the MDT, including maternity colleagues and NWODN to ensure a seamless pathway of care for neonates and their families. Responsible for shift coordination and allocation of duties to junior staff, the post holder will be responsible for ensuring patient safety, involved in quality improvement and promotion of family integrated care.

Person Specification

Qualifications/Training Essential

RSCN / Child Branch Diploma in nursing Evidence of continuing professional development Mentorship or willingness to work towards when in post Paediatric life support qualification

Desirable

Minimum 2 year experience Degree Advanced Paediatric Life Support training maintained and up to date Evidence of shift coordination/ nurse in charge responsibilites

Experience and knowledge Essential

Competence in core clinical skills (including venepuncture and cannulation) Experience of shift coordination/ nurse in charge responsibilities Experience of liaison with different agencies Knowledge of relevant policies and procedures Clear understanding of safeguarding procedures Up to date knowledge regarding national / local guidelines in relation to Children's Services

Desirable

Administration and Management of intravenous devices eg central lines, portacaths Experience of children's community services Knowledge of leadership and management Involvement in audit, clinical governance, service improvement and risk assessment

Skills and abilties Essential

Excellent verbal and written communication skills Able to teach children, families and multi-disciplinary teams about the care of a child in the community and hospital Computer literate Ability to work with colleagues across health, education and social care settings Able to prioritise workload and manage a busy environment Flexible attitude to ways and hours of working across 7-day week and 24/7 operation as service needs require Good time management
