QualificationsWho May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes translating diagnostic/procedural phrases from the medical record into coded form, using coding such as: ICD-10-CM, PCS, CPT, HCPCS LEVEL II, or similar coding systems; reviewing medical records for accurate coding; and correcting inconsistencies or discrepancies in the medical documentation/record. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05). OR Education: A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as Health Informatics, Healthcare Administration, or Health Information Management (HIM). OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 9. Add the two percentages.
Major DutiesAssign specific codes to medical records, sequencing and determining codes to accurately reflectthe resources and procedures used in the care of the patients.Ensure compliance with regulatory and third-party insurance requirements in utilizing the ICD-10-CM, PCS, CPT, and HCPCS LEVEL II coding books.Correlate operation codes with diagnosis codes to ensure the most descriptive code is selected when more than one anatomical location is involved.Perform quantitative analysis and checks medical record for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with regulatory requirements.Analyze and interprets documentation in record, ensuring accuracy, internal consistency and correlation of recorded data and returns record to provider/area for correction/completion.Identify and documents any incident which may denote a potential compensatory event or questionable breach of quality of care delivered.
