Claims Adjuster Level 1

HTM is looking for a detail-oriented, customer-focused Claims Adjuster Level 1 to join our Claims Department. This is an excellent opportunity for an individual with insurance, claims, or administrative experience who enjoys helping people, investigating claims, and finding fair and practical solutions.
About the Role
Reporting to the VP of Claims, the Claims Adjuster Level 1 is responsible for managing assigned routine auto physical damage and small property claims from initial assignment through to resolution and closure.
You will work closely with policyholders, brokers, contractors, appraisers, experts, and internal departments to ensure claims are handled accurately, efficiently, and in accordance with policy terms, established procedures, service standards, and assigned authority levels.
The successful candidate will also recognize when a claim is complex, unusual, sensitive, or outside their authority and escalate it appropriately.
Key Responsibilities
• Manage assigned routine auto physical damage and small property claims.
• Review new claims, establish appropriate reserves, and maintain accurate claim records.
• Assess policy coverage and determine appropriate claim responses.
• Conduct thorough investigations and document findings.
• Arrange damage assessments and coordinate contractors, appraisers, experts, and other service providers as required.
• Review and evaluate damages and determine appropriate compensation in accordance with policy terms and applicable legislation.
• Monitor and adjust reserves as new information becomes available.
• Negotiate settlements and process payments in accordance with established authority.
• Maintain complete, accurate, and well-documented claim files.
• Communicate promptly and professionally with insureds, claimants, brokers, and other stakeholders.
• Explain the claims process, policy response, and responsibilities of the insured.
• Ensure claims progress efficiently toward fair and appropriate resolution.
• Deliver a high level of customer service and meet HTM's published Service Standards.
• Participate in Claims Department meetings, training, industry events, and professional development.
• Stay current with changes to legislation, regulations, case law, policy forms, and claims systems.
• Support colleagues and contribute to departmental and organizational goals.
What We're Looking For
Education & Experience
• College or university education, preferably in Business Administration, Insurance, or a related field; or
• Minimum two years of comparable practical experience.
• Experience in insurance, claims, office administration, or related services is preferred.
• Claims support experience is considered an asset.
Knowledge & Skills
The ideal candidate will bring:
• General knowledge of Property & Casualty Insurance.
• An understanding of the Mutual Insurance Industry.
• Knowledge of insurance policy forms, terms, conditions, and coverage.
• Strong computer and claims system skills.
• Awareness of fraud indicators and claims fraud prevention.
• Excellent attention to detail and a high level of accuracy.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Excellent time management and organizational abilities.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Conflict resolution and negotiation skills.
• A customer-focused approach and strong relationship-building skills.
• The ability to work independently while contributing effectively as part of a team.
• The ability to recognize and appropriately escalate complex or unusual claims.
