An exciting opportunity has arisen at The Christie Pathology Partnership (CPP) for an Associate Practitioner to join our Blood Sciences department. The Christie is a world-leading cancer treatment centre and a specialist site with no Accident & Emergency or Maternity services. We are looking for a keen, enthusiastic individual with an interest in developing services to help us continue to deliver exceptional, high-quality integrated care to our patients.

The role will be Monday to Friday, with working hours from 10:30am to 7:00pm, with an expectation to provide evening cover for Pathology Reception duties. Once competency has been achieved within Blood Sciences, there may also be a requirement to support weekend services.

Main duties of the job

To be able to rotate through all areas of the Laboratories as required (Dependent on qualifications, experience and training), to perform all designated duties in accordance with local working practices, to maintain high Professional standards and conform to Health and Safety regulations. To perform Biomedical investigations, within operating procedures and protocols, to provide within agreed quality standards of service delivery and turnaround times under the supervision of senior grade BMS grade staff. To continue with personal development through academic or practical experience. To provide professional leadership and supervise Trainee BMS and Medical Laboratory Assistants.

The Christie Pathology Partnership delivers a high quality, responsive pathology diagnostic service to The Christie and other healthcare providers regionally and nationally. An international leader in research, The Christie is the largest single site specialist cancer centre in Europe.

Our laboratories also provide testing, screening and assay development to support The Christie's early phase clinical trials, with around 200 trials underway at any one time.

Job description Job responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities

Be able to rotate through all areas of the laboratory required (dependent on qualifications, experience and training) performing all designated duties in accordance with local working practices whilst maintaining high personal standards and conforming to Health and Safety regulations. Perform routine and specialist biomedical investigations and participate daily in the scientific and technical activities of the laboratory section, which may include specimen reception functions, under the supervision of Biomedical Scientists. Participate in and assist with clinical trials, the development of new tests and research & validation of equipment ensuring at all times compliance with all policies as required by regulatory directives, accreditation bodies and local management policies and practices. Propose changes to standard operating procedures as required in order to develop and streamline the service or to reflect other changes. Utilise the laboratory LIMS, Q-Pulse quality monitoring system and other application software according to authorised protocols including assisting in computer data entry in all areas of the laboratory. Communicate efficiently, courteously and with clarity at all times, whether face to face, telephone or electronic methods referring enquiries to senior staff where appropriate. Matters being communicated may include complex information and/or results. Attend and participate positively in laboratory and other meetings as directed by Laboratory managers. As directed by senior laboratory staff, plan and prioritise work allocations, training plans, audits of both yourself and junior staff, responding appropriately to the needs of routine and urgent activities. Provide supervision, training and professional leadership to junior staff which includes monitoring their performance against laboratory standards and their training plans. Encourage active participation in continuous professional development and support the introduction of new technologies and / or systems by being a change advocate, and active mentor and a tutor to junior staff. Use consumables and equipment within your allocated section responsibility and be responsible for stock control audits and recording through approved channels as required. Report all incidents and adverse events to senior staff and enter the information in the CAPA module of Q-pulse in a timely manner as directed by senior staff. Demonstrate on going competency against training plans.

Person Specification

Qualifications Essential

Relevant NVQ level 3 plus additional theoretical and applied training to Level 4 diploma equivalent level. Have, or working towards, other mandated qualifications specific to the role.

Desirable

Good degree of accuracy, numeracy & interpretive skills Ability to communicate with a wide range of levels of staff within the laboratory and user organisations Good developed interpersonal and team working abilities Participation in CPD activities

Experience Essential

Experience of working in a Biomedical laboratory Experience of IT applications including LIMS systems, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Statistical packages

Skills & Knowledge Essential

Working knowledge of Biomedical techniques and practices

Desirable

Able to contribute to the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of policies/protocols/guidelines relevant to area of practice
