About this role
Position Summary
Under general supervision, the Substation Engineer 2 executes standard substation designs and provides construction/commissioning support. Produces complete design packages, coordinates with internal/external partners, and ensures designs align with IEEE/NESC and CoServ standards and with PUCT/ERCOT/NERC expectations.
Primary Position Responsibilities
• Produce standard substation design packages (one-/three-lines, layouts, grounding, raceway/cable, equipment specs).
• Perform typical calculations (equipment ratings, thermal/clearances, grounding grid sizing, short-circuit inputs) with peer review.
• Coordinate with Civil/Structural and P&C to integrate designs and eliminate clashes.
• Prepare and review equipment specs; support bid evaluations and submittal reviews.
• Provide construction support (RFIs, field changes, redlines) and update as-builts.
• Support commissioning readiness (punch lists, pre-energization checks) and capture documentation for turnover.
• Maintain design records for compliance evidence and future maintenance use.
• Identify design improvements; suggest updates to standards and templates.
Secondary Position Responsibilities
• Mentor Engineer 1 on drafting standards and calculation basics.
• Contribute input to long-lead material lists and equipment forecasts.
• Participate in lessons-learned and bring actions into future designs.
• Support IT/OT integration efforts for substation systems.

Position Requirements
Education, Experience, and Certifications Required
• Bachelor of Science from an ABET accredited university in Electrical, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering.
• 2 years' experience in substation engineering, design, or operations within the electric utility industry.
• Engineer In Training certification.
Education, Experience, and Certifications Preferred
• 4 years' experience in substation engineering, design, or operations within the electric utility industry.
Skills and Abilities Required
• Working knowledge of substation equipment and layouts; grounding and clearance fundamentals.
• Familiarity with regulatory environment (PUCT/ERCOT/NERC awareness).
• Proficiency with Microsoft 365; ability to use CAD and basic analysis tools.
• Strong organization, documentation, and cross-team coordination.
Skills and Abilities Preferred
• Experience with AutoCAD and analysis tools (ETAP/ASPEN).
• Exposure to construction means/methods and commissioning workflows.
Physical Requirements
• Ability to lift a minimum of 25 pounds.
• Ability to sit for long periods of time
• Drives company vehicle as needed.
• Operates office equipment such as a computer, telephone, fax machine, copier, etc.
• Works in potentially hazardous conditions caused by pets and wildlife in or near the work site.
• Works in areas with possible exposure to poison oak, poison ivy, and insect stings.
• Exposure to outdoor environments, including high-voltage facilities, requiring adherence to strict safety protocols.
• Occasional travel and extended hours may be required during project commissioning and outage support.
