An Undergraduate Teaching Assistant (UTA) provides academic and administrative support to faculty by assisting with course preparation, facilitating classroom activities, and supporting student learning. Responsibilities may include maintaining course materials, assisting with grading under faculty supervision, leading review sessions, holding office hours, and serving as a resource for students while maintaining professionalism, confidentiality, and adherence to university policies.
Responsibilities and Career Competencies:
• Assist the faculty member with preparing instructional materials, organizing course content, and maintaining the learning management system (e.g., Canvas) – T, TW, P
• Provide academic support to students by answering general course questions, holding scheduled office hours, and referring students to the instructor when appropriate – C, L, P
• Assist with compiling assignments, quizzes, and other coursework under the supervision of the faculty member while maintaining confidentiality and academic integrity – P, CT, TW
• Facilitate classroom activities, review sessions, or small-group discussions to reinforce course concepts and encourage student engagement – C, L, TW
• Monitor student participation and communicate with the instructor regarding attendance concerns, student progress, or potential academic issues – C, CT, P
• Assist with administrative tasks such as maintaining course records, organizing instructional materials, scheduling meetings, and preparing classroom resources - P, T, TW
• Model professionalism by demonstrating effective communication, leadership, dependability, and ethical conduct while interacting with students, faculty, and staff – P, C, L
• Support a positive and inclusive learning environment by encouraging student success, answering questions respectfully, and serving as a peer mentor throughout the semester – L, C, CTR
