Education: Other trades certificate or diploma. Work site environment: In/on water. Work setting: Staff accommodation provided. Remote location. Tasks: Command and operate ships or vessels to transport passengers and cargo. Supervise and co-ordinate activities of deck crews. Determine geographical position using navigational instruments, maps and charts. Direct and oversee the loading and unloading of cargo. Maintain vessel's navigational instruments and equipment. Control, steer and navigate a vessel in various waterways. Enforce regulations in Canadian waters. Record vessel's progress, weather and sea conditions in ship's log. Supervision: 5-10 people. Certificates, licences, memberships, and courses : Transport Canada Certificate of Competency. Marine Emergency Duty (MED) Training Program. Vessel experience: Factory freezer or trawler. Mobile offshore drilling rig. Security and safety: Medical exam. Transportation/travel information: Travel expenses paid by employer. Personal suitability: Dependability.
