Level of expertise: Maintenance and repair. Tasks: Operate woodworking machines, such as power saws, jointers, mortisers and shapers, to cut, shape and form parts and components. Prepare specifications of custom-made cabinets that maximize storage. Shape surfaces or edges of wood workpieces, using hand tools, such as planes, chisels, or wood files.. Instruct apprentices. Sand wooden surfaces and apply veneer, stain or polish to finished products; prepare and apply laminated plastics. Estimate costs and materials. Prepare tenders and quotations. Work with minimal supervision. Prepare estimates of labour and/or material costs. Prepare layouts in conformance to building codes, using measuring tools. Measure, cut, shape, assemble and join materials made of wood, wood substitutes, lightweight steel and other materials. Build foundations, install floor beams, lay subflooring and erect walls and roof systems. Maintain, repair and renovate residences and wooden structures in mills, mines, hospitals, industrial plants and other establishments.
