Software Engineer 3 – Network Security

Team: Network Security Location: Bengaluru

About the Team The Network Security team builds and operates foundational network segmentation capabilities that help protect eBay’s production environments across clusters, datacenters, and cloud footprints. The team develops control-plane/data plane services and platform integrations that enforce policy boundaries, strengthen isolation, and improve the security and reliability of critical traffic flows.

Role Summary We are seeking a Software Engineer 3 to join the Network Security team with strong hands-on experience in backend systems with Kubernetes framework, and networking fundamentals. In this role, you will design, build, and maintain reliable software components and services that support network policy enforcement and segmentation across distributed environments. You will contribute to production-ready platform capabilities with a strong focus on quality, operability, scalability, and secure engineering practices.

What You’ll Do

• Design, build, and maintain reliable control-plane services that orchestrate network policy and segmentation across Kubernetes clusters and datacenters.

• Develop integrations with SDN and CNI layers such as Istio, Envoy, Calico, or Cilium, along with Linux networking primitives such as iptables, nftables, routing, and VXLAN.

• Write production-quality code backed by unit and integration tests, CI/CD pipelines, and strong observability practices including metrics, logging, and tracing.

• Troubleshoot and debug Kubernetes, Linux networking, and distributed-systems issues, and contribute to incident response and postmortem follow-through.

• Collaborate with partner teams across Security, SRE, and Cloud Platform to deliver reliable and maintainable platform capabilities.

• Improve the reliability, scalability, and operational readiness of services through better rollout practices, configuration management, monitoring, and automation.

• Participate in design discussions, evaluate technical tradeoffs, and contribute to implementation planning for features and enhancements.

• Support a culture of engineering excellence through code reviews, documentation, and thoughtful operational ownership.

Must-Have Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

• 5+ years of software engineering experience in backend or systems engineering.

• Strong programming skills in Go, Python or a similar systems-oriented language, with hands-on experience building distributed services.

• Solid understanding of TCP/IP, Linux, and container networking fundamentals.

• Strong Kubernetes fundamentals and hands-on experience building or operating services, controllers, operators, or similar platform components.

• Proven debugging and troubleshooting skills across Kubernetes, Linux networking, and distributed systems.

• Experience running and maintaining services in cloud environments at scale.

• Familiarity with CI/CD, observability, and production support practices.

• Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across teams.

Nice-to-Have Qualifications

• Experience with etcd, SQL or NoSQL datastores, and control-plane design patterns.

• Familiarity with service mesh technologies, eBPF, or advanced networking and policy frameworks.

• Experience with security policy engines such as OPA or Gatekeeper, multi-tenancy, or multi-cluster controllers.

• Exposure to event pipelines and messaging systems such as Kafka, PubSub, or SQS.

Why This Role Matters This role is an opportunity to help build and evolve a critical segmentation platform that protects eBay’s infrastructure at scale. You will work on foundational networking and security capabilities that improve isolation, reliability, and operational resilience across distributed systems. Your work will directly strengthen the platform services that safeguard critical traffic and enable secure growth across eBay’s environments.
