About this role
Freelance Visual Merchandiser – Product Galleries (3-Month Freelance Contract)
Category Research Team | Project Sponsor: Category Research Lead | Freelance, 3-month contract
Purpose
Deliver a short, 3-month project to prepare our product gallery standards and imagery for our biggest sales season. This is a one-shot project tied to a system change: rebuild our gallery guidelines, train the team on our new AI tool, and support the rollout: selecting and curating imagery for existing and new products. Apply the refreshed standard to the backlog of existing products that need a visual refresh ahead of peak season.
Scope of services
• Define and document the product gallery standard: image order, template/layout per product type, aspect ratios, backgrounds, and where brand pictograms or overlays are used.
• Build and maintain a decision framework (checklist / flowchart) designers use before starting a gallery, covering the most common scenarios so fewer decisions need to escalate.
• Select and curate imagery for new listings from existing assets for our team of designers.
• Audit the existing product catalogue, prioritise galleries that are outdated, inconsistent, or underperforming, and recommend and oversee agreed improvements.
• Prepare creative briefs aligned to the gallery standard and provide quality assurance feedback on completed design deliverables.
• Train the team on our new imagery system as part of its rollout and help establish clear usage guidelines for the tool.
• Liaise with Category Management Leads and copywriters to keep visuals aligned with content guidelines, campaigns, and partner requirements.
• Track gallery quality/coverage (e.g. % of products meeting standard) and report on progress.
• Provide localised content and localised gallery standards per market adapting to local audience expectations and buying behaviour, not just translating a single template.
Expertise required
• Experience in digital merchandising, e-commerce visual content, or design operations; this is a digital role built around renders/mock-ups, not physical retail display.
• Strong eye for visual consistency, composition, and product presentation at scale.
• Process-driven: able to turn subjective, one-off decisions into repeatable rules a design team can self-serve from.
• Experience briefing and giving feedback to designers.
• Understanding of multi-market e-commerce and localisation standards.
• Background in gift, travel, or experience e-commerce.
• Familiarity with PIM/DAM tools and image asset management at scale.
• Proficient with Excel.
• Comfortable learning and working with AI tools; experience training others on new software is a plus.
