About this role

Job summary There is a 26 station outpatient dialysis unit, a 5 station inpatient dialysis unit and an outpatient peritoneal dialysis unit on the St Jamess Hospital site. The haemodialysis service also has a 32 station haemodialysis unit at Seacroft hospital site in Leeds, and satellite dialysis units in Halifax, Huddersfield, Dewsbury, Pontefract and Beeston. The successful candidate will join an enthusiastic and supportive renal department with 17 consultant colleagues, an associate specialist and junior doctor team. The post will be based at St Jamess University Hospital and will be predominantly clinical with responsibility as a member of consultant team for providing inpatient and outpatient care for nephrology, dialysis and renal transplant patients.

Main duties of the job Leeds Teaching Hospitals is one the largest teaching hospital trusts in Europe, with access to leading clinical expertise and medical technology. We care for people from all over the country as well as the 780,000 residents of Leeds itself. Our 20,000 staff ensures that every year we see and treat 1,500,000 people in our 2,000 beds or out-patient settings, comprising 100,000 day cases, 125,000 in-patients, 260,000 A&E visits and 1,050,000 out-patient appointments. We operate from 7 hospitals on 5 sites all linked by the same vision, philosophy and culture to be the best for specialist and integrated care. The Trust is closely linked with the University of Leeds and undertakes both undergraduate medical teaching and postgraduate studies. The renal service provides high quality care for the population of Leeds and the surrounding area and is the regional centre for renal transplantation. The main renal unit is within the St Jamess University Hospital site; the renal service also has an outreach service providing nephrological review and dialysis support to inpatients at the Leeds General Infirmary site. The main renal unit has 42 inpatient beds on two wards, which provide inpatient care for nephrology, dialysis and transplant patients. This post will also contribute to the General (Internal) Medicine rota.

The successful applicants should hold accreditation in Membership of the Royal College of Physicians or equivalent and should be on the Specialist Register or within six months of CCT at the time of interview, if currently in a training programme within the UK. In accordance with the consultant appointment regulations, all other categories of doctors must be on the Specialist Register.

Applicants must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in all aspects of renal medicine, including the management and care of chronic haemodialysis and renal transplant patients. Excellent communication and team working skills, a strong commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and service development are essential.

Consideration will be given to applicants who wish to work full or part time and those wishing to job share.

“How would you develop a service over the next 10 years, to cater to needs of our local population?”

Why you should join our Team Abdominal Medicine and Surgery (AMS) Clinical Service Unit (CSU) is based entirely at SJUH. This CSU was formed in 2015 through the merger of two separate CSUs, bringing together all the major gastrointestinal medical, surgical and transplant specialties as well as nephrology and urology under one management team, allowing for improved cross-specialty collaborative working.
