About the RoleYou will work across a variety of acute and community services, depending on service need and your clinical experience.
Acute Adult ServicesOur acute Occupational Therapy teams work across a range of specialties, including:
o Emergency Departmento Older People's Serviceso Acute Medical Unito General Medicineo Stroke and Neurologyo Trauma and Elective Orthopaedicso Renal and Oncologyo General Surgery and Vascular Serviceso Critical Care and Respiratory Services
Main duties of the job
To provide a high quality expert Occupational Therapy Service to a specialist caseload of patients within nominated clinical specialities based at Guy's and St Thomas Hospital Trust.
o To manage a complex caseload using critical thinking, reflection and analysis to support assessments using a client centred approach.
o To be responsible for a designated team of Occupational Therapists providing leadership for junior staff, apprentices and Occupational Therapy Assistants through supervision and performance management as required.
o To assist junior staff in the management of complex cases requiring advanced clinical reasoning.
o To lead and advise on clinical Occupational Therapy developments within the hospital and nation-wide level, and other related Trust wide projects.
o To be responsible for the maintenance and development of own CPD identifying and contributing to the evidence base of Occupational Therapy.
o To educate Occupational Therapy Students on clinical practice placements.
o To provide a patient centred approach and current evidence base to assess, treat, implement, evaluate and document Occupational Therapy interventions.
o To support the management of the Occupational Therapy Service as required by the Heads of Service.

Education Essential
Diploma or Degree in Occupational Therapy HCPC Registration
Education Essential
Masters level or equivalent training in specialist area or evidence of significant practical experience, research or publication in specialist area.
Experience Essential
Clinical experience in physical disability and knowledge of the interplay of disease process and functional well being. Experience should include a varied range of clinical experiences Evidence of continuing professional development and post registration education and training. Experience of audit/quality improvement projects Ability to supervise junior staff and students. High standard of performance in a range of clinical skills in physical disability.
Desirable
Experience in areas such as: Older People Acute medicine Neuro/ICU Palliative care
Skills Essential
Specialist knowledge, understanding and application of Occupational Therapy process relating to client centred practice. Specialist knowledge, application and analysis of standardised assessment tools. Awareness of upper and lower limb positioning and orthoses. General knowledge of end stage disease processes, palliative care and the dying process. Demonstrate sound techniques in applying a range of sensory physical and manual assessments and treatments. General understanding of frailty and impact on occupational performance Ability to prescribe adaptive equipment, assistive devices, wheelchairs and pressure cushions for patients with a variety of complex conditions. Ability to work autonomously, acting decisively on behalf of self and others, setting own priorities, in both a hospital and patients home environment. Experience of working within multi-disciplinary diagnostic and intervention services Ability to promote clinical excellence in self and others. Demonstrate clinical leadership skills and excellent team building skills. Demonstrates ethical reasoning and critical reflection. Committed to improve the experience of service users, appreciating complexity of context, culture of diversity. Proven experience in the training, teaching and supervision of others. Proven experience in developing and providing education and teaching programmes to other professionals and students. Ability to apply Clinical Governance principles to practice. Implementation of national initiatives and legislation relating to Health and Social Care and Occupational Therapy. Ability to manage and recognise differences of opinion in both patient related and inter-professional settings, coping positively with inter-professional tensions/ barriers.
