About this role

Job summary

Wye Valley NHS Trust wishes to appoint a Consultant in Urology, to be based at the County Hospital, Hereford.

The current Urology Department is made up of 4 Consultants, 2 Associate Specialists, 6 Specialty Doctors and a supporting team of Clinical Nurse Specialists. We are looking to introduce a fifth consultant to the team.

The successful candidate will be a urology surgeon with an interest in robotic surgery.

Main duties of the job

The Trust have a dedicated Urology Diagnostics and Treatment Centre, carrying out One Stop assessment clinics as well as Flexible Cystoscopy, Local Anesthetic Template Biopsy, Urodynamics and a dedicated Lithotripsy machine for both elective and emergency ESWL.

Robotic surgery on the Davinci platform is available for this candidate. Training and mentoring to use the robot will be offered to the successful candidate, as required.

The Trust has a successful record in Supporting Doctors through the CESR process, with 3 Doctors having completed and now working at Consultant level. The Trust are happy to support any candidates in progressing CESR applications if of interest.

Job description Job responsibilities

Provide a Consultant Surgeon service for the management of urological diseases, as required for outpatient, inpatient and day-cases at the WVT. Be committed to the Urology on call rota. Participate in multidisciplinary audit meetings. Be actively involved in postgraduate training / teaching especially for the SpRs in the department. Participate in departmental audit and clinical governance activity. Work with the management team to meet the organisations waiting time targets for all patients.

Person Specification

Experience & Knowledge Essential

oBroad training/experience in all aspects of Urological disease. oTraining and Experience in the procedures necessary to diagnose and treat both cancer and benign conditions. oAbility to offer expert clinical opinion on range of problems both emergency and elective within specialty oAbility to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients oIndependent unsupervised operating experience.

Education & Qualifications Essential

oFRCS or qualification of an equivalent level oFull GMC Registration with Licence to Practice o

Desirable

oHigher degree oFellowship in Urology Robotic Surgery Entry on Specialist Register in Urology via CCT or CESR, Or within six months of obtaining Specialist Registration (at the date of interview), or obtaining CESR. oSuccess in Intercollegiate Specialty Examination or overseas equivalentat/above Specialty Doctor grade

Audit/Quality Improvement Essential

oExperience of audit management and conducting clinical audit

Desirable

oUndergone training in teaching and willingness to organise relevant audit activities including quality improvement evidence oCompletion of formal courses in Audit and quality improvement.

Audit & Research Essential

oUnderstanding and interest in research. oAbility to appraise research critically oAbility to supervise juniors undertaking research projects. oEvidence of recent research and development activity oEvidence of audit cycle completion oPublications in peer-reviewed journals oEnthusiasm for service development and for "coal face" teaching and training of junior staff. oAn awareness of current specialty specific developments and initiatives
