This unique and highly influential role offers the opportunity to work across a range of services, providing senior operational leadership to hospitals requiring additional support, recovery, stabilisation or transformation. As a group-wide leadership resource, you will be deployed to services experiencing quality, safety, leadership or regulatory challenges, as well as supporting established Hospital Directors and senior leadership teams to strengthen operational performance and deliver sustainable improvement.
When acting as Hospital Director, you will have overall responsibility for the leadership and day-to-day operation of the hospital, ensuring the delivery of safe, effective and high-quality care. You will provide visible and inclusive leadership across all departments, driving a culture of accountability, collaboration and continuous improvement while ensuring patients remain at the heart of everything the service delivers.
In this varied role, you will lead on strategic planning, operational performance, financial management, workforce development and regulatory compliance. Working closely with clinical and operational teams, you will identify priorities, implement improvement plans and support services to achieve their quality, performance and governance objectives.
You will be responsible for maintaining robust governance and assurance frameworks, ensuring services are compliant with regulatory requirements and able to demonstrate high standards of care, safety and patient experience. As a key member of the regional leadership team, you will work collaboratively with senior stakeholders to support organisational goals, contribute to service development and drive positive change across the wider business.
This is a national role with expectation that you will travel across the organisation to different sites, this may require overnight stays.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
Provide visible leadership as Acting Hospital Director when deployed to services. Lead service recovery and improvement programmes, including supporting hospitals facing regulatory or quality challenges. Drive strategic objectives, service development and business growth in line with organisational goals. Support and develop leadership teams, embedding high-performance cultures and standards. Operational Management
Lead the day-to-day operation of hospitals, ensuring safe, effective and efficient service delivery. Oversee workforce planning, resource management and operational performance. Participate in hospital and regional on-call arrangements as required. Financial Management
Maintain oversight of budgets, financial performance and cost control measures. Monitor KPIs and performance data to support informed decision-making and sustainable service delivery. Quality, Governance & Compliance
Ensure compliance with CQC regulations, the Health and Social Care Act, and organisational policies. Lead governance, audit and quality improvement activities to drive patient safety and service excellence. Contribute to regional operational and clinical governance forums. People Leadership
Lead, motivate and develop multidisciplinary teams, fostering a culture of accountability, inclusion and continuous improvement. Support recruitment, retention and succession planning across services. Stakeholder Engagement
