About this role

Job summary

The Department of Endocrine Surgery sits with The Department of Upper and General Surgery at St Thomas' Hospital.

Endocrine surgery service is an integral part of the Regional Thyroid Cancer service and Provides a local and regional service for Adrenal, Parathyroid, and benign thyroid pathology. There is a close working and joint one-stop thyroid clinic with the Department of Endocrinology. There are close links with the Endocrine surgery team at Kings College Hospital with cross-site working.

We operate at St Thomas Hospital on Mondays and Tuesdays and at King's on Wednesdays. We perform around 300 thyroid and parathyroid and 40 adrenal procedures per year.

Main duties of the job

The post will be to provide support to the Endocrine surgical unit in the form of outpatient clinics, theatre sessions, MDT attendance, in addition to ward cover and administrative duties attached to these clinical commitments. General surgical call cover is not a planned part of the position, but support will be required depending on departments needs including with supporting with Upper GI benign when the need arises.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Training Essential

Full GMC Registration MRCS

Desirable

Other relevant academic qualifications e.g. BSc / MSc

Clinical Experience Essential

Experience of Endocrine Surgery (ST3+) Participation in On Call rotas at Registrar level

Knowledge and Skills Essential

A commitment to and evidence of multidisciplinary practice A team based approach to care and service management. Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to communicate effectively with colleagues; clinical and non-clinical patients and their carers/relatives.

Desirable

IT skills with Word and Excel

Research: Essential

An ability to initiate, pursue and complete clinical or basic medical research

Desirable

A track record of working with clinical databases Exposure to writing papers and poster presentations GCP certification

Teaching Essential

An ability to teach undergraduate students or other junior doctors.

Desirable

Certificate of medical education

Good Medical Practice Essential

Evidence of understanding of and adherence to the principles of Good Medical and Surgical Practice set out by the GMC.
