Cataract Co-Ordinator, Band 6

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced and motivated nurse to take on the role of Cataract Co-ordinator within Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. The post holder will play a key role in supporting the day-to-day coordination and delivery of ophthalmology services, ensuring high standards of patient care and service efficiency.

The successful candidate will work closely with the multidisciplinary team to manage patient pathways, coordinate clinics and procedures, and support service delivery across outpatient and surgical settings. They will be responsible for overseeing clinic flow, supporting staff, and ensuring patients receive timely and effective care.

This role requires strong organisational, communication, and leadership skills, with the ability to manage a busy clinical environment while maintaining patient safety and quality of care. The post holder will also contribute to service improvement initiatives, audit, and the ongoing development of the ophthalmology service.

Main duties of the job The post holder will coordinate the day-to-day running of clinics, ensuring efficient patient flow and optimal use of capacity while supporting the delivery of high-quality patient care. They will act as a key point of contact for patients, relatives, and the multidisciplinary team, managing patient pathways to ensure timely access to appointments, diagnostics, and treatment. The role involves prioritising workload in a busy clinical environment, responding to service demands, and working closely with clinical and administrative teams to maintain smooth service delivery. The Nursing Coordinator will provide leadership and support to junior staff, uphold standards of safety and patient experience, and ensure accurate documentation in line with Trust policies. They will also contribute to audit, quality improvement initiatives, and service development, while maintaining compliance with clinical governance, infection control, and safeguarding requirements.

Person Specification

Essential Essential

Significant post-registration experience in ophthalmology, particularly within anterior segment services (e.g. cataract, cornea) Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team Demonstrable experience in coordinating clinics or patient pathways in a busy clinical setting

Desirable

Specialist training or competencies in cataract pathways (e.g. pre-op assessment, post-op care)

Education and Qualifications Essential

Registered Nurse (NMC), Band 6 experience or equivalent Evidence of recent and on-going professional development

PG Cert: Clinical Ophthalmic Practice or equivalent Mentorship/teaching/assessing course or prepared to work towards

Experience Essential

Post registration experience working in an acute hospital setting Experience in ophthalmology / day surgery / theatres Experience of supporting elective surgical pathways, theatre preparation or patient pathway co-ordination Experience of pre-operative and/or post-operative assessment, patient education, clinical escalation or follow-up within ophthalmology, day surgery or elective care
