About this role

PCSI is seeking a Pipefitter to join its Mechanical department. Responsibilities include installation, repairs, and maintenance of high‑pressure steam, hydronic heat, chilled water, and plumbing systems across a military facility. This role involves reviewing as-built drawings, fabricating and assembling pipe, troubleshooting system issues, and testing systems to ensure safe and efficient operation while following established safety standards. The position requires formal apprenticeship training or equivalent experience and the ability to work independently in physically demanding indoor and outdoor environments. This position will report to the Mechanical Supervisor and is based at Detroit Arsenal in Warren, MI.

Typical shift: Monday – Friday, 7:30 am – 4:00 pm

Rate of Pay: $52.25 per hour plus Health & Welfare (union shop), full benefits (including paid federal holidays off)

This position is part of a 5-person plumbing/pipefitting shop executing facility operations & maintenance (O&M) and repair contract, consisting of 55 buildings comprising nearly two million square feet of space and roads and grounds maintenance of approximately 170 acres on a military installation.

• Inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair boilers, pressure vessels, humidification boilers, burners, feedwater systems, condensate return systems, fuel systems, steam traps, heat exchangers, expansion tanks, pumps, and other associated mechanical equipment.

• Inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair steam, condensate, hot water, chilled water, compressed air, natural gas, and fuel gas distribution systems, including piping, valves, regulators, meters, and associated equipment.

• Diagnose and repair chilled water systems, including piping leaks, flow restrictions, balancing issues, control valves, pumps, and other system performance deficiencies.

• Perform seasonal startup, operational monitoring, shutdown, testing, repair, and replacement of safety valves, relief valves, control valves, condensate receivers, expansion joints, pumps, and associated piping components.

• Maintain high-pressure steam systems in accordance with applicable codes, standards, and manufacturer requirements.

• Record operating data, maintenance activities, equipment deficiencies, and corrective actions in maintenance management systems.

• Read and interpret blueprints, isometric drawings (ISOs), material takeoffs, field sketches, and specifications.

• Follow established safety practices and procedures while maintaining a safe and clean work environment.

• Participate in an on-call rotation and respond to after-hours emergency service calls as required.

• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.

• Minimum 3 years' experience maintaining and repairing one or more of the following systems: chilled water, steam, hot water, or natural gas distribution systems and associated mechanical equipment.

• Experience working in industrial, military, government, healthcare, or campus utility plant environments preferred.

• Ability to obtain boiler operator certification and/or boiler plant qualifications required to support high-pressure steam generating equipment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of boiler operation, gas/fuel delivery systems, feedwater systems, condensate systems, and steam distribution networks.

• Knowledge of National Board Inspection Code (NBIC), ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, and applicable OSHA safety requirements.

• Ability to use a tablet or mobile device to access, update, and complete work orders, inspections, and maintenance records using Microsoft Office applications.

• Ability to work independently and collaboratively with maintenance personnel, subcontractors, and government representatives.

• Ability to read and interpret boiler operating logs and mechanical system diagrams.

• Able to effectively read, write, and speak the English language.

Working Conditions

• Successfully pass pre-employment drug/alcohol screen, background check, and motor vehicle report.

• Must be able to obtain and maintain security clearance, including a National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI) investigation.

• Maintain valid State of Michigan driver's license and remain insurable to operate Company vehicles.

• Work is done inside and outside, and is usually dirty, dusty, and greasy. Frequent exposure to uncomfortable heat conditions. Repairs and installations may be made from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, and other hard-to-reach places above 12 feet. Must stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, stretch, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions.

• Frequently lifts parts and equipment that weigh up to 24 pounds. Occasionally lift items that weigh over 25 pounds with assistance from other workers and lifting devices.
